Magical anomalies are a common and dangerous feature of the landscape on Nesfaolo. The worst of these anomalies create entire weather systems, a phenomenon locals have taken to calling arcane weather. Recorded examples are detailed below:
Arc Storm
- Signs: crackling metal, hair standing on end
- Effects: metal objects become magnetized, repelling or sticking together for the duration of the storm
Perhaps the most hated arcane weather phenomenon, arc storms electrify and therefore magnetize all metal in the area, which depending on circumstance can be catastrophic. Worst still, arc storms are invisible until they are almost upon you, leading to stories of travelers being torn apart as their metal armor suddenly repels itself.
Gravity Well
- Signs: odd lightness or heaviness, strangely tall or short plant life
- Effects: local gravity is modified, either lessened, heightened, or absent altogether
These huge, unmoving anomalies can be a blessing or a curse, depending on their severity. Gravity wells that reduce local gravity can be helpful when traversing rough terrain, though increases in gravity can be literally bone crushing.
Inverted Rain
- Signs: water flows in the wrong direction, plants seem parched
- Effects: local moisture and free water is drawn upward into the clouds
Though strangely beautiful, an occurrence of inverted rain is deadly beyond belief. Those caught in its path will feel the moisture within their bodies slowly sucked out, turned to tiny droplets that float gently away, leaving behind a desiccated corpse.
Plasma Cloudburst
- Signs: distant flashes of very bright lightning without thunder
- Effects: searing bolts of plasma seek out living flesh as a conduit to ground
Local fauna and the people of Respite know to seek shelter when lightning flashes without thunder's peal. The pure white bolts of plasma behave much light traditional lightning, but seem to seek living flesh, incinerating those who are caught unprepared.
Swallowing Mist
- Signs: odd, writing mists that do not burn away in the sun
- Effects: instantaneous and unpredictable teleportation
Likely the result of an ancient magical experiment gone awry, swallowing mist almost seems alive. It writhes across the ground, and any fully engulfed find themselves far from their original location upon exiting the shifting mists.
These represent a mere fraction of the odd arcane weather experienced by those living on Nesfaolo, and weirder occurrences may yet exist outside of the awareness of those living at Respite.
