Griffons Species in Strathnora | World Anvil

Griffons

Griffons are powerful and regal beasts. They are a symbol of strength and freedom in many cultures, though not all.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Griffons are powerful and dangerous predators capable of flight and near silent stalking of prey. They all share the same basic build, that of having a front half of a bird, and the back half of a feline-like creature, though the actual appearance of these two halves can vary greatly from environment to environment.

The 'Classic' Griffon, a combination of an eagle and a lion, are the most common type to be found in the wild, inhabiting most mountainous areas.Other examples include the combination of a Snowy Owl and a Lynx that may be found in the Tundras of {Unnamed Continent}, or a Griffon that is a combination of a Vulture and Sphynx may be found in the deserts of {Unnamed Continent}.   Working Griffons are Griffons that have been tamed and bred for specific purposes. An example of this is the Racing Griffon, which are smaller, sleeker and vastly faster versions of their Classic cousins, taking after the Peregrine Falcon for their front and the Cheetah for their rear.

A recent fad has also emerged for the ownership of "Lap Griffons", smaller Griffons that can be kept as pets. These are often a combination of smaller birds, such as Cockatiels, and Domestic Cats, such as the classic Tabby Cat.

Ecology and Habitats

Found across the world of Strathnora, Griffons have been able to adapt and excel in many different habitats. From the White Peaks mountains of the continent of Eagos, to the blood red sands of the Red Wastes, there are Griffons of many sizes and appearances.

Dietary Needs and Habits

A Griffon's favorite prey are undoubtedly Jackalopes, though they will also prey on any creature of similar or smaller size in their environment.

Behaviour

Some people believe that Griffons actually followed Jackalopes from environment to environment, adapting in much the same way as the rabbit-like creatures specifically so they could keep hunting them. Griffon's seem to have such a love of Jackalope meat, that it is not uncommon for a Griffon to drop the perfectly good carcass of a mountain goat just in order to hunt a Jackalope they have spotted.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Most Griffons share their avian front's sensory abilities, usually granting them exceptional sight, but poor hearing.
