The First Martians
The First Martians, contrary to the name, were not actually the first humans to set foot on Mars. They were not the first to settle on Mars, either, though those early colonies met with tragic end. Instead, the First Martians were those workers who were sent to Mars in the first wave to construct what would become Martian society. They built the first homes, the first protective domes, the first factories and farms. They built what all other life on Mars would require. However, they were not sent to Mars willingly.
The First Martians were prisoners of the Crown who were sent to reduce strain on the prisons they were being held in. They were chosen based on a lack of violent history as well as possessing the skills needed for the task. They were not given a choice in if they would go or not.
Once construction was complete, the First Martians had largely decided that life on Mars was now far more comfortable for them than life on Earth. Almost all of them requested that they be allowed to remain on Mars, to be part of the first wave of workers. The Crown denied them this and, through whatever means they felt they needed to resort to, brought the First Martians back to Earth.
Many of these First Martians were teenagers and young adults who had been born on Mars. They were no longer native to Earth and found themselves desperately missing their home. One of the companies that owned Mars took an interest in them and allowed ten thousand of those born on Mars to return, under the condition that they work to provide for the company.
Today, First Martians have distinct culture and oral traditions that set them apart from most other Martians. In fact, their histories can be traced back nearly perfectly. There are about one million First Martians now, and they have not been beholden to any company since the Martian Strikes of 3147. Conflict between the First Martians and various other Martians are fairly rare, though there have been some groups of First Martians who are fairly hostile to anything or anyone from Earth.
