The Custodians

A quick word on the Custodians:
The Custodians were a special unit of warriors signified by their heavily enchanted armor. This armor was designed to essentially prevent necromantic energies from tearing at the body and pulling at the soul, slapping their magical fingers away. Problem is, when the world went to hell and necromancy became more powerful than it was ever supposed to be, this enchantment went nuts. With the entire world being very necromantic all the time, the enchantment basically trapped their souls inside their bodies permanently, and trapped their bodies inside the armor. For protection, you see. Outside being trapped in a terrible state of not-quite-living, incapable of passing on to whatever afterlife is out there, the Custodians aren't monstrous. Most of them have lost themselves somewhere along the way, but still remember what they used to be about. People tell stories about mute warriors wearing majestic armor showing up, solving a problem, and then just sort of wandering off without any semblance of normal human interactive behavior, robotically moving on to some other task. The Custodians were made by the Former Archons to confront the coming necromantic storm, but like most other things, they only sort of survived it. Many Custodians have died since then, and when I say died I mean that they have been destroyed so badly that they can no longer function. Only very few of them are actually still around, with their mental faculties in a somewhat decent shape. Ward, one of our main characters, is one of them. Forgetfulness is one of the things that plague the remaining Custodians, and Ward suffers from it greatly. He no longer knows his name, where he came from, who he loved. All he knows is the rough outline of the mission he and his was given; stemming the tide of necromancy. And so he does his best.
For the record, there might be living, normal Custodians out there somewhere, but they certainly aren't making themselves known. Also, while Ward is a powerful warrior (very much the "big guy" if you will), his weaknesses are many. His memory is in tatters, his social game is completely destroyed, and he smells faintly of decay and rust. He doesn't need to eat, drink or sleep, but he still kinda yearns for it. He also hasn't felt the touch of another person (not even sexually, just literally) since he put on the armor, and he genuinely doesn't remember what it's like. Ward remembers next to nothing, but he does remember that he's forgotten a lot, and that hurts. he does what he does both out of a lingering sense of what his duty is, but also because "if i keep moving maybe i wont have to stop and think". on that note, the name Ward isn't his real name, it's just what he does. he wards off evil, he is the ward of the people, etc etc. he simply stuck with that because the thought of not having a name scared him. also, he wields a chain flail in the shape of a rough-hewn fist, which is a symbol of the god of metal. or maybe a hammer, also a symbol of Jorn.
