Gnome

Group Minded

Never straying too far from their own or the group they associate with. Devoting their lives to group causes, objectives, and projects with the mentality that more can be done together than alone. There are very few times where you will catch one being selfish and that is usually when they are close to completing a project that has been on their mind for a while. Enjoying to work in layered modular groups. Groups that are part of groups that are a part of groups etc. The entirety of their society is run by guilds and businesses that employ smaller guilds and businesses that perpetuate the cycle. It is a very complicated web of ties and connections, and knowing they are a part of a whole is exceedingly calming for Gnomes. A mindset that was ingrained heavily because of their ancestor's roles as prey for the ancient Catfolk.

Planning Problem

They are a nervous and twitchy species that enjoy their planning. Over-prepared is not a word that exists in their vocabulary and it characterizes Gnomes well. They are complex thinkers who have backup plans for problems at the ready. It is very stressful for them to operate without any sort of forethought and the prospect of being forced to make decisions on the fly takes a toll on them. Actively thinking about courses of action to take is mentally calming for Gnomes, and you can find them working out a single problem for hours until they settle on a decision. This effect has also been known to become addictive to some. Becoming so enamored by the "what ifs" they seek out the most complex problems to ride a mental high puzzling out the answer. This has led to the term "overthinking" being attributed to being a serious condition rather than just a common turn of phrase for Gnomes.

Biological Traits

Humanoid and very short, Gnomes have stubby limbs and are usually 2' 6" - 3' in height. Their eyes, fingers, and ears are a bit larger than most. With their large eyes extremely good at seeing in the dark. Muscular is not something used to describe your Gnomes. While not obese per se, keeping themselves fit requires a great deal of effort for the diminutive race. During their adolescent years, they are very hyperactive. Constantly running around and finding small little hiding places where they can work on their little projects. This is a habit they grow out of as they grow older, but they usually retain a certain level of twitchiness. Gnomes tend to live a largely active lifestyle and don't stop until something catastrophic happens. Heart attack, stroke, internal bleeding, a broken hip. It is rare for them to die of "old age" but all too common for them to suddenly die.   They reproduce normally for humanoids, and pregnancy lasts for 3 months. Generally, Gnomes reach adolescents at age 7 and reach adulthood at age 14. They can age as far as 65 years old. Gnomes are not especially picky about what they eat as long as it fulfills their needs. That, accompanied by their readiness to change their environment, Gnomes tend not to care about the terrain or weather of where they live. As long as it has the materials and amenities they want. They will change the rest. Though their favorite places to inhabit are large forests craggy mountainsides, places with an abundance of space but also nooks and crannies.

Naming Traditions

Common-Mother Family: (Sil-lac Corintuli)   Common: Single syllable name for everyone.   Mother: Typically the first syllable of the mother's name, it is only offered to trusted friends or used formally.   Family: A 4 syllable word which used to be made by combining the parents names. Nowadays they are just common family names passed down the generations.     Common names (First Names) are typically extremely short one-syllable words that compliment the quick bouncy speech patterns of Small Talk. Originally having gender inflections, those standards eventually gave way to generic simplicity. With no real distinction between genders.   Mother names are combined with the common name during social and formal events. Used to signal your family connections to ease formalities. It is rare for this name to be used outside of these occasions but is sometimes offered to very close friends. Someone's mother name is never used by itself.   Family names (Last Names) are broken up into four distinct syllables which are formed from the first names of the parents and two other people the parents respected. Some see it as a slowly waning tradition and have instead opted to create new last names in their union and have their children keep the new common name.

Gender Ideals

Gnomes do not particularly view gender in any light other than romantically. Seeing others as equally capable no matter your gender, which, in the case of Gnomes, there are extremely few differences between the two anyway. There tends to be a high social pressure to dress as your gender, however. Viewing it as simply confusing to dress differently, something that causes tension with other races. Particularly Halflings, who very much enjoy twisting their gender looks to purposefully confuse others.
