Personal history
Valencia had family at some point, she thought. Or maybe that was a fantasy. Maybe she’d been born into this life of constant killing and hunting. If Malachi knew her past, he never told her. She didn’t dare ask. He didn’t take questions. The expectation whenever she was in his presence was to do as she was told and nothing more. She was adopted by the Keep at a young age (about four), forced to finish jobs to repay an extravagant debt that she’d never be able to repay in a normal lifetime.
The only reason Malachi kept her was because she was a shapeshifter. Her magic manifested only a few days before he’d planned to sell her. She’d turned into a mouse to get away from him. After that, he’d kept her in a cage and put a tracking cuff on her, so he could track wherever she went (and control her form if needed).
Despite everything, Val has always been a good little soldier. Loyal to a fault, she’s become Malachi’s favorite, even if he shows it by giving her the most reckless and lucrative assignments. Her debt is slowly being whittled away, but it is not nearly fast enough. Not only that, the one man she ever loved has been brutally murdered. As a result she’s starting to question her assignments, her loyalty — everything she’s ever known — especially now that she’s found someone who can remove her bracelet.
