Boulder Bug

Boulder Bugs are heavy ambush predators that spend most of their lives perfectly still, their mineral-like carapace rendering them indistinguishable from the surrounding stone. Colonies settle in rubble fields, cave mouths, or tunnel walls where years of immobility allow dust, moss, and debris to accumulate across their backs. When prey approaches, the “boulder” suddenly uncurls—revealing crushing limbs and grinding mandibles capable of overpowering targets far larger than themselves. Encounters are rare but brutal; by the time a Boulder Bug is recognized, it has usually already struck.
