Conflict

What is Conflict?

Conflict represents your characters inner turmoil. Engaging in or allowed deeds that are destructive and hurtful will lead your character to gain conflict.   Conflict should be thought of as something like character sanity. While dark deeds may increase it, a dark user can gain inner turmoil by committing acts of good. You can also gain conflict by seeing something disturbing from failing a fear check or by having to commit a deed or witness something that goes against your character's Motivation.   Conflict is how at war with yourself your character is and getting too much of it can be detrimental.   The more conflict you have the easier it is for your mind to become clouded with doubt and uncertainty which in turn leads you towards the dark side but does not push you past the Dark side Threshold.   Only an Act showcasing your embrace o the dark side will make you cross the barrier into the Darkness

How is Conflict Gained?

A good general rule to keep in mind is that any action that damages a person's Livelihood or Harms another will generate conflict.   This includes actions such as, destruction of somebody's property, injuring another, lying to another in a way that will harm them emotionally or financially, robbing or stealing for personal gain, coercing another, kidnapping, torture and murder.   Even if the action is taken for a just cause it is still conflicting to do so.

Exceptions for Conflict

Combat situations you did not initiate, or combat situations with thugs or Imperials do not generate conflict. In these situations defeating your enemies will not generate murder levels of conflict.   Lying to others can sometimes be okay as long as it does not interfere with their lives directly. For example, lying about a party members identity to get out of trouble will not generate conflict in some situations, lying to another about who was supposed to pay the bill, or pinning a crime on another, or telling somebody an area is safe when it is not will generate conflict.   Another exception for conflict is mistreating characters who are obviously, cruel or evil in some way. Certain things like torture will always give conflict but perhaps stealing from a rich slave owner and releasing his slaves or gifting property he owned to the less fortunate could even be considered a good deed. Think of Robin Hood.   These can be discussed as they are subjective but the DM has the final say.

Other Player's Actions

It is possible to gain conflict for being complicit in others actions that may be cruel or excessive. That being said, if your character is given no opportunity to stop the other players action or protest it then you will NOT get conflict.   You will only gain conflict if you have an opportunity to act and choose not to.   For Example, If a player intends to murder another and suddenly makes a strike there will be a check to determine if you are able to respond to this. If you are not then you have no opportunity to stop that person and get no conflict for the murder. Helping hide the body afterwards would perhaps give some conflict however.   If you had an opportunity to stop the murder or warn the other and chose not to then you would be complicit and would gain conflict for allowing such a crime to occur.
