History
Situated in the gravitational center of two stars deep in the Unknown Regions (Galactic Grid D-18), and designed to be the sister station to the Jedi Order's "Starlight Beacon" Maelstrom station was originally known as the "Nova Beacon". Construction logs found by Clan U'ran indicate that when the Starlight Beacon was attacked, the majority of the work crew and Jedi stationed at the secret Nova Beacon were recalled, the construction, which was essentially complete, was abandoned to focus on the war with the Nihil.
Constructed as part Science outpost, part temple, and part prison (due to its isolation), the Nova Beacon was left with a small skeleton crew to manage the few prisoners who had been already brought and await further instructions. Those instructions however, did not come in time, as one of the Nihil prisoners was secretly carrying a Drengir spore, which sprouted and killed everyone on the station, leaving just its host. The host, the Nihil whom it had arrived on, spent the next several centuries in agony, being slowly devoured by the Drengir to prolong its own life, immersing itself in a tainted kolto tank and exiting for one day every thirty to basque in the starlight from one of the docking bays before going back into its hibernation.
When Clan U'ran discovered the beacon (later to be renamed Maelstrom Station), they discovered the Drengir and accidentally released it from its Kolto tank. A quick battle ensued where Jedi Vall Juridian lost an arm to the creature. The group later returned to the station with a plan to lure it into the docking bay and jettison it into space. The plan worked for the most part, though the docking bay was damaged in the encounter.
Clan U'ran after scouting and clearing out the remainder of the spores and sprouts, claimed the Beacon as their own, renaming it Maelstrom Station and using it as their base of operations, far from the patrols of the New Republic and the reach of the Imperial Remnant.
After discovering the remnants of a long forgotten colony ship, and nearly all of its inhabitants alive in cryogenic stasis, the group was able to wake and convince them that they were there to help. The unfortunate result being that the group would never find the new worlds they long ago set out to, but would instead help aid the newly acquired Maelstrom station, in nearly all of its functional stations.
Architecture
Aesthetically, the station design is based around the former Jedi Temple on Coruscant, and its (destroyed) sister station, the Starlight beacon. Featuring a large central spire running from top to bottom of the station itself.
