TR-120 Tactical Rifle
TR-120 Tactical Rifle
“When it absolutely, positively, needs to be neutralized through a wall.”
Classification
Type: Advanced Tactical Rifle
Designation: TR-120
Manufacturer: Starfleet Security Advanced Concepts Division / Section 31 R&D
Era: Post-Dominion War (late 2380s – classified deployment)
Status: Prototype-Classified / Rare Operational Use
Overview
The TR-120 represents the natural evolution of the TR-116A prototype — a rare convergence of kinetic warfare doctrine and cutting-edge targeting technology. Designed in secrecy, the TR-120 reintroduces projectile-based combat to Starfleet’s tactical options, optimized for use in environments where phasers are unreliable, ineffective, or politically unviable.
Unlike its predecessor, the TR-120 is not merely a sniper’s tool — it is a modular tactical platform, capable of both stealth and suppression, supporting a wide array of non-traditional ammunition types via a programmable underbarrel launcher.
Key Features
Primary Firing System
- Caseless Kinetic Rounds, 12-20 gauge programmable payloads
- Fires subsonic or hypersonic slugs, with ballistic stabilization via internal gravitic field lensing
- Optional micro-transporter-assisted deployment for firing through solid obstructions
Underbarrel Launcher
- Accepts programmable composite projectiles the size of a standard 12-gauge shell
- Launch assisted by localized grav/mag field coil, allowing variable velocity and recoil compensation
- Payloads can be pre-set or mid-mission altered via uplink to personal tricorder or command PADD
Supported Payload Types:
- Explosive – Micro-detonation, programmable delay, variable yield
- EMP – Disables nearby electronics and active shielding, effective against drones or modified Borg
- Foam – Expanding polymer foam for crowd control, trap deployment, or environmental sealing
- Tracking – Bio-signal tagging projectile, with telemetry uplink to the targeting system
- High-Impact – Kinetic round designed for structural breach or drone penetration, especially at hypersonic velocities
Eye-Piece Targeting Suite
A compact monocular visor mounted over the dominant eye, connected neurally or via optical HUD. Data is pulled directly from the ship’s or away team's sensor network.
Modes:
- Long-Range Optics – Up to 3km effective visual magnification with auto-stabilization
- Audio-Visual Echolocation – Sonar-mapped silhouettes and movements behind opaque surfaces
- Thermal Imaging – Standard and enhanced IR overlays
- Scanner Overlay – Tricorder-compatible interface with threat tagging, environmental analysis, and real-time movement prediction
Optional mode: “Smart Reacquisition” — Fires automatically when pre-marked target is reacquired and firing solution aligns within tolerances.
Operational Notes
- Eye-piece system has limited independent functionality, but performs best when networked to starship sensors (e.g., Nyx or Heimdahl's tactical core).
- Projectile rounds are replicator-supported, but require secure authorization due to their programmable nature.
- The TR-120 is bio-encrypted to specific users. Attempted use by unauthorized individuals triggers a non-lethal shock-lockout.
Tactical Usage
Originally designed to combat Borg drones, Jem’Hadar in anti-phaser environments, and internal shipboard threats where collateral plasma discharge from phasers would be catastrophic.
The TR-120 is also favored by counter-espionage units, where non-energy-based weapons reduce detection probability by passive scanners.
Deployment Status
Officially, the TR-120 does not exist.
Field deployment has been restricted to:
- Section 31 operatives
- Black operations starships (e.g., USS Heimdahl)
- Rapid-reaction units in high-threat, shielded environments
