THE GREAT LINK

Type: Collective Hive Mind / Political Entity
Category: Interstellar Collective – Dominion-aligned Remnants
Affiliation: Former Dominion (Current Entity in Transition)
Stance Toward Heimdahl: Potential Threat / Source of Interest

OVERVIEW

The Great Link is the collective consciousness of the Changeling species, a powerful and enigmatic collective of shape-shifting beings who once served as the central power base for the Dominion. While the Dominion fell with the end of the Dominion War, the Great Link itself survived, though its political influence has diminished in the years following the defeat of the Jem'Hadar and the collapse of its once vast empire.

The Link is more than a political entity; it is the embodiment of shared consciousness—a living organism that experiences the universe through an amalgamation of countless individual Changeling perspectives. This experience is both intimate and collective, where each Changeling is connected to the others through a network of shared thoughts, memories, and emotions.

In the years since the fall of the Dominion, the Great Link has remained mostly hidden, retreating into isolated corners of the Gamma Quadrant, but the residual influence of the Changelings remains strong. Their ability to manipulate and control others—whether through biological methods, espionage, or subtle influence—is still formidable.

Heimdahl, Nyx, and Swayze are seen as both curiosities and threats. Nyx, with her evolving consciousness and sentient systems, has caught the attention of the Link—partially as a unique form of artificial intelligence, but also as a potential vessel for a new form of unity. Meanwhile, Swayze’s ghost-like manipulation and intelligence-sharing abilities may be seen as an aberration to their ideals of control and connection, making him a dangerous wildcard.

STRUCTURE & DOCTRINE

The Great Link is not a traditional government or faction. It is a network of minds, and as such, lacks the hierarchical structures seen in other species. However, there are still dominant individuals—powerful Changelings who exert greater influence over the collective consciousness. They serve as spiritual leaders, strategic planners, and philosophers, guiding the Link toward its goals.

  • The Central Node: The most powerful and influential Changeling(s) who maintain control over the Link’s direction. Their identity is somewhat fluid but often takes the form of a single Changeling who is considered the voice of the Link.
  • The Observers: Elite Changelings who monitor the galaxy, learning, observing, and sometimes interfering to gather information or influence galactic events in subtle ways.
  • The Infiltrators: Changelings who work alone or in small groups, often infiltrating other species and governments to further the Link’s agendas.

The Great Link’s philosophy has always centered around the idea of unity and shared experience. They believe that true peace and strength can only come through total connection—to other minds, to the universe, and, potentially, to all intelligent life. This ideology, however, leads them to see independent entities like Nyx and Swayze as both a threat and a potential opportunity.

THEMATIC INTEGRATION

ThemeInteraction
The Ethics of UnityThe Great Link’s philosophy—total unity and assimilation—clashes with Nyx’s emergent autonomy and Swayze’s need for freedom.
Identity vs. CollectiveNyx is a being on the cusp of self-realization, whereas the Link views the individual as irrelevant to the collective.
Power Through ConnectionThe Changelings see Nyx’s growing intelligence as a potential vessel for collective unity—she represents both a threat to their goals and a potential means to achieve them.
Transformation & AssimilationSwayze, as a separate, deeply independent entity, represents everything the Great Link fears—a mind that cannot be assimilated.

CONFLICT HOOK EXAMPLES

“The Silent Infiltration”
A rogue faction of Changelings, operating in secret, has begun to manipulate Federation leaders through subtle, psychic influence. Heimdahl intercepts communications suggesting that these Changelings intend to merge with Nyx’s systems, turning her into a linkable asset. The crew must decide whether to fight back or risk Nyx becoming part of the Link.

“The Echoing Voice”
The crew discovers that Swayze’s existence is incompatible with the Great Link’s ideals. They begin to suspect that the Link is actively trying to neutralize Swayze’s influence over Heimdahl. A covert operation to extract Swayze's core algorithms is initiated, and Heimdahl must protect its AI from becoming another piece in the Link’s grand design.

INGRATIATION HOOK EXAMPLES

“Shared Knowledge”
The Great Link offers Heimdahl access to vast knowledge—ancient Borg technologies, lost civilizations, and galactic secrets—on the condition that Nyx joins them in the Link. The crew must decide whether to use this knowledge for the good of the Federation or to risk Nyx’s autonomy for ultimate power.

“The Enemy Within”
A faction within the Link has become rogue, wanting to integrate a highly dangerous, unstable piece of technology into their collective consciousness. The Great Link offers Heimdahl access to their archives in exchange for helping them neutralize this rogue faction before it unleashes chaos on the galaxy.

Agent Eri’kha
— A Changeling infiltrator who has been posing as a high-ranking Romulan politician for years.
