Bajorans Opposition

Written by DoStuffZ

Who Were the Bajoran Opposition?

Canonically, the term “Bajoran Resistance” was more commonly used in Deep Space Nine to describe the organized and scattered cells of Bajorans who fought against Cardassian occupation (2328–2369). They were freedom fighters, terrorists (from the Cardassian point of view), and often cell-based and ideologically fractured.

So where does “Opposition” come in?

Likely Interpretation:

  • “Opposition” is not a standard canon term, but it fits perfectly as a post-occupation evolution or even a revisionist label used by outsiders (Cardassians, Federation diplomats, or even Bajoran pacifists).
  • Could also refer to post-occupation political factions or militant holdouts that rejected the peace, the Provisional Government, or Federation influence.

Timeline Context:

Pre-DS9:

  • Bajoran Resistance was active during the Occupation of Bajor (2328–2369).
  • Organized into cells like the Shakaar Resistance Cell (Kira Nerys’s group), with differing ideologies—some religious, some nationalist, some vengeance-driven.

During DS9 (2369–2375):

  • The Resistance largely disbanded, though some former fighters entered Bajoran politics, like Shakaar Edon (who became First Minister).
  • Some became security forces or remained bitter ex-combatants on the fringes.
  • Bajor remained politically unstable, especially during Kai Winn's corrupt leadership and the Dominion War.

Post-DS9 (your era: ~2380s–2390s+):

  • Bajoran Opposition could refer to:
  • Hardline resistance veterans who feel Bajor “sold out” to the Federation.
  • New radicals responding to perceived betrayal — e.g., the Federation not helping enough during the Cardassian collapse or Romulan relief efforts.
  • Anti-Federation splinter groups who believe the Emissary (Sisko) led Bajor into a false peace.
  • Cultural purists wanting to restore Bajor’s pre-Federation isolationism and Prophets-first governance.

Your Campaign Usage: Shadows of the Galaxy

CREATION TEMPLATE: Bajoran Opposition

Name: Bajoran Opposition
Type: Ethnic-Political Identity
Origin: Bajor (post-occupation era, ~2370s–2390s)
Common Locations: Bajor, DS9, Free Bajoran Colonies, DMZ remnants, hidden cells in the Badlands
Affiliation(s): Splinter religious sects, former Resistance cells, anti-Federation movements, possible Section 31 manipulation
Outlook: Militant, spiritual, wary of galactic powers

Defining Characteristics:

  • Veteran Identity: Most are descendants or direct members of the original Resistance. Their culture revolves around martyrdom, sacrifice, and deep-rooted mistrust of outsiders.
  • Religious Radicalism (Optional): Some uphold the Prophets-first doctrine, rejecting Starfleet's secularism.
  • Anti-Federation Sentiment: While Bajor joined the Federation post-DS9, many Opposition members see this as a betrayal of Bajoran sovereignty.
  • Cultural Purity: Advocates for a return to Bajor's traditional values, rejecting hybridization (cultural, technological, interspecies).
  • Guerrilla Doctrine: Even in peace, they train as though the Occupation never ended — living by Resistance ethics, decentralized leadership, and self-reliance.

In Narrative Terms:

  • A Bajoran Opposition member on the Heimdahl might carry the weight of their people's scars.
  • Their background offers storylines of conflicted loyalty, trauma weaponization, and ethical friction with Starfleet’s ideals.
  • They may have ties to older Resistance cell networks — some of which may have mutated into black-market arms dealers, truth cults, or post-war refugees.
