French Republic

The Sixth French Republic. France has suffered painful blows to its condition as a world power and is currently suffering from growing instability under a compromise government.

History

The French have lost a great deal of prestige on the international stage thanks to the failure of the European Economic Community to establish an united Europe, their failure to deal with the African conflicts and their unreliable and hostile governments during the late aughts.   The Panic exacerbated many issues with the French government such as the Euroscepticism which served to undermine France diplomacy abroad; in the national stage the late nineties governments failures to improve material conditions or outright corruption radicalized the population.
Since the start of the Panic the French involved themselves in their former colonies, as theocratic movements emerged around meta humans. Originally the French intended to use law enforcement to contain these movement but conventional law enforcement and straight antipathy for French intentions in Africa led these efforts to fail miserably.
In 1996 the French launch a military operation against the Baathist movement in Morocco but are soundly defeated due to a lack of intel. This early defeat invigorated the rebels and soon enough Mali, Mauritania and Algeria had joined into overthrowing their governments in favor of a United North Africa under a Muslim theocracy.
Since then the situation in North Africa has slowly deteriorated for the French who currently only have limited control over the shores of Algeria.   In 2000 the french president was assassinated by a meta human who, correctly, believed him to be a crook.   Under the threat of an outright fascist government taking power the people voted for the Socialist united front in the elections but their government was plagued by desertion and incompetence which eventually forced them into a completely ineffectual cohabitation government with the fascists.
Following the rise of the CAN in 2002, their abandonment of the Françafrique, confiscation of any property and concessions to foreigners and seizing of bank operations in Chad the French negotiated with the American government to support the invasion of Iraq in exchange for support in an invasion of Central Africa, this led to the still ongoing 2003-2010 invasion of Central Africa.
The invasion was a clusterfuck, widely repudiated at home as an imperialist project.   In 2005 the fascist would take power and significantly scale the war in Central Africa and Libya, which was seen as the principal sponsor of the CAN. Following French pressure and threats from the Wahhabi movements in the west, Libya petitioned to join the CAN.   The high cost of the war, reduction of civil liberties to combat "terrorism", the expanding power of the far right, constant defense-government corruption scandals and alienation from the European community turned France into a powder keg.
The financial crisis of 2009 finally lit the fuse, thousands of people came out in protest of the wars, the loans offered by the NU and demanding the renounce of the sitting government.
The government took the loans and refused to surrender power.
The next month Paris, Lyon, Marseilles and Toulouse would be under control by insurrectionists. French troops were retreated from all foreign conflicts, ending the French intervention in Africa.   The French government was defeated relatively quickly but the insurrection devolved into a full blown civil war once the question of the replacement was brought up, a liberal contingent demanded immediate elections but the communist contingent refused unless their demands would be met, regardless of the elections results.   The French civil war continued into 2012 with the agreement of the Centrist party to reduce European interference, renegotiate the 2009 loans, as well as a series of economic reforms to reintroducing and enlarging the dirigisme policy.

President Joan Flanders

Member of the socialist party, Joan was elected after the end of a grueling civil war where France was divided between Soviet style communists and liberals. Under her leadership she managed to negotiate an end to the war, ending foreign intervention in the war and repatriate political POWs and political prisoners.   Flanders entered her presidency with a large amount of approval and broad support but as her term has progressed she's fallen short of expectations.
She managed to stem foreign interference from the recovery period after the war but caved to onerous clauses for France to reenter the European Community and the Northern Alliance; her term saw a rise in quality of life but followed by immediate stagnation and cuts to social programs.
