Following the death of General Secretary Konstantin Chernenko, the Politburo passed over Mikhail Gorbachev and chose instead to appoint Romanov to lead the USSR. In the late 1980's he would take a harder line against the budding protests throughout the Soviet Union.

Despite being more prone to paranormal activity, the departure point between Spooky Earth's timeline and our timeline occurred as recently as the mid-1980's. This timeline provides context for the largest departure points, but it should not be taken as a thorough analysis of world politics in the late 20th century.
