Spirit D6 Social&Reputation

Social skills

The Persuade skill is to be used only on non-player characters. Very simple requests like "can you watch this for a minute" require one success. A moderate task might be something like receiving shelter for the night as a favor, while a difficult task might represent something like helping another break into a house or do something for them that requires significant effort. Depending on the npc's attitude and priorities, there are tasks that they may not be willing to undertake no matter the successes of the Persuade roll.

Intimidate and Bluff checks are opposed by Insight. Intimidate success can be modified by -2 to +2 depending on the credibility of the threat, and successful intimidate can generally be considered a successful persuasion, at least when the threat is judged greater than whatever is being demanded. However, attempting intimidate will tend to lower a character's attitude to Neutral or Unfriendly.

Bluff is used to convince the subject that you believe what you are saying is the truth. This might not mean that the target believes this themselves, just that they believe you believe it. However, a particularly outrageous lie (the sky is hot pink) might still incur a penalty to successes. Bluff successes are modified by the attitude of the target.

Attitude

The attitudes of non-player characters can be tracked on a 5 point track when necessary. This track is generally a measure of trust, and determines how easy the character is to convince of something. This track should be considered per interaction, as a character might have differing levels of trust in another depending on the context. For example, a character might trust a banker to give them back their money, but might be neutral towards the banker in other contexts.

Finally, if a character regards the subject as their Rightful Commander, they consider themselves to be bound to follow their commands, such as if they were their unit commander in battle for example.

The Level of the attitude is added to the successes of a Bluff or Persuade check. Thus, if you were to roll 2 successes to persuade a Friendly acquaintance, it would count as 3 successes.

Level Attitude Description
+2 Trusted Friend The character regards the subject as an ally and confidante, and can be expected to side with the subject in a conflict.
+1 Friendly acquaintance The character knows the subject by reputation or some personal contact and has a basically good opinion of them. For example, two laborers working the same field, or a shopkeep and their regular customer.
0 Unknown The character does not know the subject or has no particular opinion on the subject.
-1 Unfriendly Either due to personal reasons, reputation, or biases, the character believes the subject is untrustworthy and potentially malicious.
-2 Hostile The character is actively hostile to the subject. The character will actively work against the subject, up to and including attacking them.

Reputation

Player characters can have Reputations in different groups and settlements. While usually a character's reputation will be Neutral, meaning that characters belonging to that group do not regard the player character in any particular way, a Positive Reputation in a particular group or settlement means that characters in that group or settlement regard them as a Friendly Acquaintance, while a Negative Reputation means they regard them as unfriendly.

Reputations should be limited. When a character starts play, they might have Positive Reputation in their particular small community, for example among the people of a single hamlet. As the campaign continues, characters may accrue positive and negative reputations among various groups and settlements. Particularly accomplished characters might have a reputation accomplishing an entire city or country.
