Olath Akh Mercenary Company
Translated from the drow tongue it means, "dark band", which aptly describes the company and it's leader. The commander of the mercs is a man named Hazal De' Balshay. Hazal is a half drow; he has short cropped white hair, dusky brown skin, and brown eyes. He stands just under six feet in height, although he has his human father's strength, as witnessed by his finely toned muscles. Hazal typically wears a suit of elven chain, taken from the body of a slain elven adventurer, and a jet black cloak, with dragons emblazoned on the sleeves. Hazal's mother was a drow, Azalash, from a minor drow city far to the south. She was trained as a wizard, serving her house. But as is the case in drow society, she became house-less, an outcast when her house was destroyed. She fled the city, eventually ending up far to the north, near Zhentil Keep. She was found by a Zhent patrol, and was captured in her weakened state. Azalash was sold to a high ranking General of the Keep's army, Zassthar. Azalash tried to escape many times, but due to the magic dampening bracelets she was forced to wear she could go anywhere. She endured a savage beating each time she tried to escape, which made her want to kill her master even more. After a while, Azalash gave up trying to escape, for by some cruel prank of the gods, she and her master eventually fell in love with each other. The two were wed, and eventually a son was born to them. Azalash was given the use of her magic back, and she began to study an ancient spellbook that had come into Zassthar's possession. The book gave instructions on how to safely contact the Lords of the Nine, a group of powerful baatezu lords(see Dragon #223). Again, by some fate of the gods, Azalash was successful, and concluded a pact with the Lords. They saw this as a chance to play havoc with the prime and its inhabitants. She was given some minor powers, and was able to guarantee that her son would be safely hidden with the Nine if some event in the city should cost her or her husband's life. Sure enough, several lower ranking Zhentarim became jealous of the couple's power, and one night they moved against them. During the battle, a dying Azalash summoned a portal that took her young son from danger. Both Azalash and Zassthar were killed that night. Hazal grew up in the care of the Lords, spending several years with each, although he spent the most time with Dispater. So powerful was Hazal's devotion to his "foster parents", he carved their names on his chest. Hazal then was returned to the prime, where he was instructed to sow deceit and war on Faerun. He took to this task admirably and with great zeal. Hazal quickly gathered a group of evil men and humanoids and proceeded to begin the slaughter. His first military action was a raid against High Horn in the dead of winter. He was beaten back by the Purple Dragons, to whom he still holds a grudge against to this day. He wandered the Heartlands, butchering and plundering the small villages he came across. Soon, the Heartlands became to "hot" for he and his company to stay, so he moved into the North, where he and his band roam today, taking assignments as Hazal sees acceptable.
Hazal De' Balshay 11th level half-drow warrior CE S:17 I:16 W:12 D:13 Con:17 Ch:18 HP:102 Magic Items:longsword +3, shortsword of quickness, elven chain +2, rope of entanglement Hazal has been described as "the blackest soul that ever walked Faerun" by the sage Raewin Corwellan of Neverwinter, shortly before Hazal cut him open from crotch to neck. As a youth, he learned many forms of cruelty from the Lords, a lesson Hazal has taken to heart. He was always a quiet sort of person, even now, slow to anger but capable of extreme acts of cruelty. Many of the men who follow Hazal admire his savageness on the battlefield and respect him greatly. They realize that Hazal is their ticket to immense riches and power, and few seek to betray him. Hazal inspires loyalty from his troops, something that is rare in those of CE alignment. Hazal's company takes on those jobs that are seen as distasteful or evil, even taking assignments from the Zhents. Hazal's dreams are filled with images of him sitting on a throne of severed heads, propped up in the middle of some town square, as his armies march past to conquer all of Faerun, turning the world into a bloodbath. These dreams are what drive Hazal on, and knowingly committing an evil act gives him great pleasure. One of his favorite activities is to visit a farmhouse in the dead of night, watching the family sleep. He then proceeds to break into the house, tying up the family and slowly torturing them to death. He especially likes to cut their heads off and replace them with heads from some of the farm animals. He also enjoys hurting children, for that is what causes parents and families the most grief and suffering. If the PCs get the attention of Hazal, he will send his agents out to gather information about them. When the PCs come face to face with him, he will taunt them by saying things like, "I'm going to take great pleasure in raping your sister" or "I'll look forward to sacrificing your daughter to Cyric" or any sort of things sure to make PCs irritated as hell. Perhaps he'll sneak into the inn where the party is staying, and when one PC is in the bathhouse washing his face in a washbasin, Hazal will sneak up behind the character. When the PC stands up and looks in the mirror, Hazal will be standing there right behind him(use the effect of shock in those cheesy slasher flicks). Hazal is also protected against scrying and divination attempts by the Lords. When a detect evil spell is cast upon Hazal, the caster must make a save versus paralyzation at -2 or be stunned for 1d4 rounds, due to the extreme evil to be found within him. Paladins save at -1.
Armelius Drathkar 9th level human wizard, Hazal's lieutenant S:10 I:16 W:15 D:13 Con:11 Ch:14 HP:21 NE Magic Items: Robe of eyes, bracers AC2, wand of fireballs(20) Armelius was recruited by Hazal after he was thrown out of the Mages Guild of Waterdeep for "practices detrimental to the good of the races". Armelius was experimenting on vagabonds and the homeless, testing out several forbidden spells(see Dragon #162, Bazaar of the Bizarre; Book of Horrors or use any other necromantic type spells). Hazal and Armelius quickly formed a close bond with each other, starting with blood oaths to protect each other. Armelius has command of the small faction of mages within the Company.
Make-up of Olath Akh 10 mages:levels 2-5 6 priests(of Cyric):levels 2-4 16 scouts(various classes with thieving skills and information gathering):levels 2-4 190 warriors(various races):levels 1-5
Minor Members Hazal's group has some notable rogues and scoundrels: Jarath "the Blade":human, fighter 3 Grugor Spinesnapper:orc, fighter 2 Kelias "Cuthroat" Leulas:elf, thief 3 Parath Quelthar:halfling, thief 4 All have been with Hazal from the beginning, and all are wanted in a hundred towns, villages, and cities across the Realms.
Resupply The Zhents resupply the Company every month, usually sending a small caravan to some location in the North. Hazal specifies a specific site, then moves his Company several miles from the supply area. He then sends out a small team of armsmen to meet with the Zhents and pickup the supplies. In drastic situations, Hazal will either buy of steal what they need from whatever community they happen to be near, although they do not attack the larger cities and towns, instead they purchase from these places.
Prospective Clients Most of the clients that the Company takes assignments from are evil. These include Luskan, Hellgate Keep, orc tribes, Zhent agents in the North, slavers, pirates and any other evil organization that operates in the North. Harpers have tried to infiltrate the group and have failed. They are usually crucified to a cross and hung up near some roadway. Hazal and his group are not overly large, so this enables them to move around with ease. There are bounties on the members of Olath Akh all across the North, even the Heartlands, the Shining South, and even as far away as Kara-Tur.
