Nanosian Sea Dragon

Nanosian Sea Dragons are an aquatic species native to the ocean moon Nanos.

Appearance

Nanosian Sea Dragons are long lanky creatures with long bodies and tails. They have two sets of pectoral fins one in front and one in back, with the hind fins being much smaller. They swim similarly to a snake moving their body and tail side to side in a slither-like motion. They do not have a dorsal fin, but their body is very thin and narrow, with flat sides.   They have thin pointy heads with large jaws and small pointy teeth, They also have gills on the sides of their heads, behind the base of their skull.   They have smooth blubbery skin, that tends to be grey or black in appearance, with liter coloring on their belly and underside. Males also have a large boney crest on their chins; females may also have a small chin crest but this is uncommon.

Biology

Diet

The Nanosian Sea Dragon is an apex predator and eats as such, being a carnivore. They eat all manner of fish but seem to prefer eating bigger aquatic prey and have even been known to hunt Nanosians. They are known to hunt in groups.

Behavior

Nanosian Sea Dragons live and hunt in pods often working together to separate weak or young prey from their group and chase it till it tires and they can eat it. These pods may be resident pods -meaning they stay in the same region and tend to be larger- or transient pods - meaning that they move around rather than stay in one place, they also tend to be smaller.   They have very strong familial bonds, with families traveling in pods together; Mothers often stay with their children for their whole life and act as leaders, with pods having a matriarchal structure. Fathers have nothing to do with their offspring, and often are loners or are from another pod.   Sea Dragons communicate with each other through the use of echolocation and clicks, whistles, and other vocalizations. They may also use body language.

Uses

Nanosian Sea Dragons are not used much, but they are studied and researched by people working at the Nansoian Center for Scientific Study who find them fascinating. They also may be hunted by Nanosians, but this is rare and appears to only be done when the Sea Dragon is posing a threat, they tend to leave the Sea Dragons alone as they are very dangerous.
