Monoblading

Monoblading is an activity where one wears a type of rollerskate with one large wheel each.   Monoblading originated on Athea but has since become a widespread hobby, with equipment being made for different species with different leg types. They are able to be used by people of all ages and sizes, hence their widespreadness and popularity.   There are Monoblading events that are streamed across the holonet, especially games like Monoblading Roller Derby and other agility or speed events, and it is quite popular to watch in one's free time.

Equipment

The equipment required for monoblading obviously includes a set of monoblades. The monoblades are boot-like in shape with large round wheels on each boot, the boots have stabling structures which strap to the shins and lower legs of the wearer to provide extra support. Some sets, particularly those for children or beginners, will have an extra smaller wheel parallel to the larger one for extra stability although these tend to cut down on agility.   The blades are propelled forward partly by the wearer's own movements, and partly by small engines that propel the wheels. The speed of the engine is dependent on the wearer's movements, ie. putting weight on the front of the foot will speed up the engine, and shifting weight to the back of the foot will slow down. Due to the engines, the monoblades can go faster than the simpler person-propelled rollerblades.   Most of the extra equipment is used for protective reasons. Padding like elbow and knee pads as well as helmets are commonly worn, and in cases where the user is participating in faster more extraneous activities will wear more extensive padding like arm and shoulder guards as well as leg and hip guards all of which are used to help prevent injury and road rash should the user fall or skid at high speeds.

Usage

Monoblading can simply done as a fun activity at rinks or along walkways, with many adults and children having a pair, but some activities can be done with the skill.   The easiest and most common activity is agility courses which involve the person maneuvering around obstacles, weaving through cones, and jumping over short barriers. Some courses can also involve ramps that the person can go up and down to gain speed and perform jumps on.   Another, more dangerous activity, is Monoblading Roller Derby which involves two teams vying for points earned by lapping the opposing team members; whoever would complete a lap first would win the point. Derby is often performed at very fast speeds and involves the teams being very physical with each other while trying to stop the other team from scoring points; this all leads to the sport being very athletic and in some cases dangerous with many of the athletes having injuries sustained during the sport.   Monoblading Roller Derby is a somewhat popular sport with many planets and cities having leagues and the events often being teamed or posted over the holonet.
