Kolumba was settled during the Great Exodus by an African ethnic group whose culture has been partially preserved by the isolation from the mainstream of human settlement. The characteristic dark skin colouration of the locals is partly due to genetic heritage but mostly due to the merciless climate and the harsh sun. This forces most of the population to live underground for most of the long year. The settlers did not degenerate in technology very far after being cut off from the mother planet and have held steady at tech/8 for over 200 years. Recently some advancement has been made with a gas giant chemical plant being opened along with a modest asteroid mining operation about forty years ago.

The ethnic preservation makes this planet (like Kurosawa, Meccano and others) an interesting anthropological study place, revealing much about lost attitudes from Old Terra. It is thought by academics that the planet may join the League in a few years to strengthen trading connections in the Sardonicus sector.
