"Make no mistake. These oversized dogs? They know. Sorcerer, warlock, wizard, witch. They can tell the difference, and they have the means to take them down too." — Magehund Company within Silverhold
Magehunds, originally native to Vikinitos, have spread in popularity and usage because of their keen abilities of locating by smell alone, mages. They are a large size class of canid, who are able to be used as mounts. They come in a variety of different colors. Alpha Magehunds are a dire version, and are worth signifcantly more as they tend to be double the normal size, and double as efficient. To the point where a Alpha Magehund can hunt down mages along their teleportation pathways, rather than just by smell.
How and why do these dogs accomplish this? Magehunds do so because in Vikinitos, a land that you think would be free of mages as it is Barbarian dominated, have many problems with Phase Spiders. The Astral is thin up near northern Vikinitos, and as such, Magehunds developed over time.
They are considered an invasive species in Premura, but Vikinitos is more than happy to exploit them. Magehunds are often hard to handle if you are a mage, but are very people friendly if you are a martial. This is because of the fact of their whiskers are very mana sensitive. They find being fawned over by a active mage just has a certain level of uncomfortablity to it that makes these hyper intelligent canids cringe.
Magehunds can usually be found for sale only in capital cities, in the wild in Premura, Vikinitos or Vlaidislav.
Their prices tend to range anywhere between 30gp for a puppy, to 80gp for a full grown, trained adult.
Their diet is consistant of exclusively mana based creatures. They take a little over a year and a half to reach full maturity, weighing at a little over 900 pounds, with alphas more so at one thousand.
Puppies are sold at three months, which is generally when they are about the size of a normal medium sized dog.
