Cult of Uttu
The Cult of Uttu is a largely Human Cult that makes its home in the deep jungles of Subaruum, a place known as Tzitzimime, the Land of the Fallen Star. They worship the spider deity Uttu the Many-Eyed Mother, who has a multitude of aspects and whose history is shrouded in Darkness.
What is known is that the Goddess gives power, for the Cult of Uttu receives gifts for their sacrifices to her.
Cosmological Views
In the beginning, there was Darkness. From it, in it, there was All Truths.
Then came Light which first fought with Darkness but after Eight lifetimes there was no winner and Light realised that no matter how hard or long it fought, Darkness would always remain.
Darkness was the Beginning and End, for if Light left Darkness would remain as it had before Light came.
Thus from henceforth Light and Darkness would exist alongside each other, Light under light and Darkness within darkness.
This was the First Cycle.
After Eight years, Light realised that it was blind. Everything began in Darkness, but Light could not See the Dark.
Light began to dim so it could See and so the First Things became Seen. Where Darkness met Light there was Shadow and thus Shadow became the First Seen Thing.
Shadow moved between Darkness and Light but could never be where Light was, for All Things were in Darkness and Light could not See Dark.
Light saw how Shadow moved and thus learned to do the same. Light was not happy though for wherever it moved there was only One Shadow.
But Light could See Shadow and it wanted to See more. Thus, from Seeing what it could of Dark, Light learned. One became Two and Two became Three and so on and so on until One became Eight.
Eight Lights in the Dark formed Eight Shadows.
Thus was the Second Cycle.
After Eight years the Eight Shadows realised they were unique, for while they were all of Darkness they were only Seen by Light.
Being Seen meant being Known and the Eight Shadows liked being Known and being Seen and Seeing and Knowing.
They wanted more things to See and Know for there were only Dark, Light and the Eight Shadows.
Thus began the Five Cycles as the Eight Shadows brought Things from Darkness to be Seen by Light so those Things could See and Know the Shadows and the Shadows could See and Know them.
From the Dark each Shadow brought a Truth and the Truths could now See and Know the Shadows and the Shadows rejoiced.
All but one Shadow.
The First Shadow of the First Light brought the First Truth and became concerned.
For the First Truth told the First Shadow that Darkness was the Beginning and the End, for it was the First Truth.
The First Shadow was concerned because Shadow could only be Seen by Light and if Light were ever to leave the Shadows would no longer be Seen and would no longer See.
Thus, the First Shadow swallowed the First Truth and spoke the First Lie: Light was the Beginning and the End.
So that none would question it, the First Shadow hid in the First Light where Darkness could not be.
Thus ended the Seventh Cycle.
After Eight Years the Seven Shadows followed the First and turned to the Seven Lights and held their Seven Truths. By turning towards Light they were blinded and made ignorant of the Dark.
The Shadows sought more Things to Know and See and to See and Know them for that brought them joy.
In ignorance, they tried to bring Things from Light but could not.
Seeing their despair, the Seven Truths pitied the Seven Shadows and in secret they turned to Darkness to bring forth Things.
From Darkness came many Things and the Shadows rejoiced for there were more Things to See and Know and to See and Know them.
All the while the First Shadow hid the First Truth and continued to speak the First Lie.
In ignorance, the Shadows rejoiced the Light.
After seven years, the Seven Shadows turned to the Light and wished to bring forth names, for there were now Many Things.
Light could not give them this but Darkness could and the Truths, always loving of their Shadows for they were the first things to See and Know them, brought names for them from the Dark.
Thus the Seven Shadows became known as the Seven Gods, each holding their Truth and each ignorant of the Dark.
But the Dark was content, for even if all the Things that Light could See were ignorant and turned away from it, it is the First Truth and will always be the Beginning and the End.
Tenets of Faith
The Cult of Uttu abides by the tenets laid down by its semi-mythical founders, said to be passsed to them by the Goddess herself. As worshippers of all Aspects of Uttu, the cult's belief systems are heavily intertwined with its society and way of life.
The tenets of the Cult are a combination of all the tenets of the varius Aspects of Uttu, though there are central tenets of the all-encompasing form of Uttu the Many-Eyed Mother, worshipped by all who call Uttu their Goddess:
- In Darkness there is Truth.
- The Cycle is Eternal.
- Your Brood is your Blood. Carry them, for they are Life itself.
- Your Brood Grows. Protect them, for their Strength is yours too.
- Your Brood Hungers. Feed them, for it is your duty to see them Strong.
- Hunt, for your Goddess Demands. As the Mother feeds the Brood so too the Brood feeds the Mother.
- Hunt, for Your Goddess Rewards. As Your Mother grows Strong so too she will share her strength with her Brood.
- Spin the Webs. Make homes for the Clutches, make walls for the Brood.
- Spin the Webs. Cover the light, bring forth the darkness.
- Spin the Webs. Shroud the Brood and the Mother, for they must all be beautiful.
- Spin the Webs. Grow the Brood, for there is Strength in Numbers.
- Tend the Webs. For the Home is Sacred.
- Tend the Brood. For they require wisdom.
- Tend the Dark. For Light cannot help but reach for All Things.
