Cambriain Steel

The mutant metal.

Cambriain steel is a near-mythical metal, forged solely by the human devourer hunters, before their near-total extinction by the action of the purebloods and, since the survivors have gone into hiding, not even their descendants are able to use this knowledge to produce new weapons. The mineral needed to produce this material can only be found in one place in the world: the Denisoveese archipelago, which is highly coveted and protected by purebloods, thus rendering humans limited to using already existing cambriain steel.   The same features that make it useful also make it a great challenge for any blacksmith, even those who were responsible for discovering the technique that made its use possible in the first place. The process of working this metal is long and the reports are so conflicting that it has become impossible to follow them nowadays, at least for humans. Although they destroyed the practice by humans, due to the risk it posed to themselves, the Devourers kept it alive, and are currently the only ones capable of forging Cambriain steel to this day.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Cambriain steel weapons are recognizable by a smooth, slightly iridescent, silvery look to the final creation, if it is worked properly during the whole process. When it hits other weapons or metallic materials with sufficient force, Cambriain steel may produces spark, and it is possible to observe that the natural iridescence of the material seems to shimmer and distort itself, as if reacting to the energy being passed through it. Many have described cambriain steel as being the most beautiful creations in human history.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Cambriain steel is not only extremely lighter and sharper, but also more resistant, than any other human weapon, in addition to maintaining these characteristics indefinitely. These are the only man-made weapons able to injure devourers, and there are records that it is possible to conduct ether from the user through the weapon, allowing the user to achieve various effects, depending on their own ability to manipulate ether, and further expanding the range of options for one using such a weapon.

Geology & Geography

The mineral used in the manufacture of cambriain steel can only be found in one place in all of Somnium, the Denisoveese archipelago, and it is unknown why it exists only there - theories range from divine intervention to a possible second meteor, similar to Slohkar, that supposedly deposited the material in there in time immemorial. A more accepted and probable theory, however, says that the influence of chronite would have been responsible for the mutation of this mineral, giving it the characteristics it has today.

Life & Expiration

Contrary to chronite, cambriain steel appears to be able to maintain the charge of energy used in its creation or infused into it for an indefinite period of time. People who have inherited a cambriain steel weapon as a heirloom report that they are able to feel the energy of former users flowing through the weapon. To the shock of many, however, some soul devourers have attested to this theory, claiming that ether is retained in the material for very long time, even after the death of the user.

History & Usage

Cultural Significance and Usage

The rarity and importance of these weapons makes them extremely valuable to people who know about their history, although a common blacksmith might dismiss them as being "too light to survive a real fight". After the near-total destruction of the culture that made and used them, most Cambrian metal weapons were lost to history or destroyed. Those that survive are passed on and used in secretion, as if a devourer discovers that a human possesses such a weapon, the results will difficultly be pleasant.
