Humans
Basic Information
Anatomy
Modern human beings (Homo sapiens ...) are the descendants of the proto-humans (Homo ...) who inhabited Somnium long before recorded history. The human body is comprised of a head, neck, trunk (which includes the thorax and abdomen), arms and hands, legs and feet.
Biological Traits
While characteristics like skin color, eye width and others tend to differ in between the different ethnicities, most humans are genetically equal or similar. The biggest difference between humans and proto-humans is believed to be brain size, which has led to the addition of "sapiens" to the scientific name of the current dominant species, although this is not actually the case.
The determining factors were exposure to Chronite radiation, the effects caused by it and how each individual dealt with these effects on their bodies. While some mutated several times and died as a result of a lack of adaptability, some evolved through it and developed resistance, while others acquired even more incomprehensible functional traits.
Genetics and Reproduction
Humans reproduce sexually, with reproduction requiring both a male and a female. The female carries the fetus for an average of nine months. Although there are different ethnicities in Somnium, they can all reproduce sexually with each other and produce fertile offspring. An unknown risk factor, however, is the amount of exposure to chronite that each one may have had in their genetic history, which can generate many, often unwanted, side effects.
Additional Information
Domestication
Humans were "tamed" by the Soul Devourers a long time ago, in a moment that nearly culminated in the total extinction of the human species. Despite living under the control of the Devourers at the present time, most are unaware of it.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Human beings, in general, have the five basic senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. Despite this, some humans, members of the group that developed beyond the rest of the species as a result of their exposure to chronite, went on to develop other different senses and unknown abilities, although these are relatively rare these days.
Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms
Soul Devourers, who require human blood and souls to survive, count as a parasitic species residing in the world of Somnium.
Civilization and Culture
Historical Figures
Lexander I of Dawnia: A noble and militarist who brought peace to the Seentriaese region by uniting all the warring kingdoms that existed there.
Common Myths and Legends
The False Story of Somnium is an example of a widely believed myth. Created by the devourers to plug the hole left by their voluntary disappearance, humans believe this story represents everything that happened in the world of Somnium.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Although soul devourers are infertile due to the extreme exposure to chronite they have endured, their blood, when ingested by humans, can cause unusual changes in the human body. Essentially, the Devourers discovered methods of causing an accelerated evolution in chosen humans, leading to the creation of Duplicates and Hybrid Devourers.
