Elf

Of all the mortal races the Elves are the longest-lived. This moreso than anything else has shaped their nature. Created from the blurring of Fey blood and mortality, Elves have an inherent magical and dreamlike quality to them. Unless misfortune or violence befalls them, elves can expect a lifespan of multiple centuries and some elders can live even a full millennia.   Elves tend to have children very rarely. Though they physically mature at approximately the same rate as other mortal species, elves are considered adolescent well into their second century and elven tradition gives little weight to the words or actions of an elf under 200. Because of their extended lifespans, Elves often devote the whole lifespan of other species to mastering a particular skill or art. This means that the average elven citizen often possesses a set of skills far superior than other races. However because of their risk averse and careful nature, elves still tend to advance slowly by comparison. Interestingly, Elven adventurers or other Elves who engage in regular risk and dangerous situations tend to advance as fast as their less long lived peers.   Because of their long life-spans, Elves are much interested in philosophy, ethics and meaning. They rely on carefully constructed philosophies to help guide the efforts of their incredibly long lives. This drive has resulted in the formation of two opposing schools of thought that guide Elven culture, the Summer Court and the Winter Court. Though some communities overlap members of the two philosophies, Elves tend to organize around these affiliations from the community level all the way up to the various Elven nations.   Elves also have a unique relationship with nature. While a Human might plant a tree with their descendants in mind, Elves live long enough to watch first hand the long, subtle movement of nature around them. Elven communities tend to be interwoven with natural places, simultaneously camouflage, ecological stewardship and an amplifier of natural energy.   Elves are often dubious about the shorter lived races, knowing that even the long lived Dwarves will wither and fade long before them. However, because of this true loyalty and friendship of an elf tends to carry beyond a single mortal lifetime, earning an ally to generations to come. Such is the case with the bond between Salissia and the Karnian Royal Family. Though it has been dozens of human generations since the founding of the Kingdom and the marriage of the first king of Karnes to his Salissian Elven bride, the Salissian Royal Family still considers the Karnian Royals their close relatives and allies.
