Ceres

Ceres is the the largest planetoid object in Sol System's asteroid belt, and home of the first outer planet human habitat. Ceres is notably the first case of human habitation that used an internal habitat model, with one massive structure built inside the planetoid instead of a number of habitats and domes built on the surface.

History

Through resource, manpower, or other means, Venus, Earth, Luna, and Mars put equivalent effort in to the creation of Ceres Port City (simply known as Ceres), the first habitat for humanity outside of the system's inner planets. The effort saw some of the greatest feats in engineering as the asteroid was spun up with the use of thousands of conventional ship drives. The habitat itself was dug into the skin of the dwarf-planet sized asteroid itself, a wedge all the way to the center, one level one atop another cut into the stone of Ceres. The spin turned out to be enough to keep people standing on a ground, but managed only 0.7g of Earth gravity (an issue that soon caused belter’s bodies to change with the generations). The first habiation section, Innerhill, opened in 2608, and consisted of three levels administration, commerce/entertainment, and housing; a rigid zonging system that quickly causing strain in every level, and pushed the need for growth and the creation of the Confederated Asteroids of the Belt.
In an effort to avoid wars like the past, the Planets grouped together and offered a treaty to Ceres. Become self-sufficient with their own industry within 100 years, and Ceres would be granted complete sovereignty from inner planet control.
And in 2708 that independence was granted as all the inner powers pulled their personnel and ruling support from the planetoid city. A city which has know grown to be the system stopping port for the belt, with the new colonies on Ganymede and Callisto, Ceres became a refill and resupply station for the inner planets and belter mining ships alike it became, and is still to this day, the largest port of any kind built by humanity. Along with the port Industry, Ceres had seen the creation of two more colonies within larger asteroids of the belt, and three orbital habitat stations as well as six shipyards to accommodate the influx in mining activity.
