Tekhne Possena in Slumbering Gods | World Anvil

Tekhne Possena (tɛk-nɛ pɔv-sɛ-na)

Tekhne Possena is the technical name for wizards, mages, warlocks, magicians, or whatever word you wish to use. They are called different things depending on the kingdom, but Tekhne Possena are all known for one thing...killing.

If you see a Possena hide. Wait until they're gone, then run. Tell the king, or one of his soldiers. If you see a Possena turn him in. They are a dangerous people, who are born for killing and destruction.

Thankfully, Tekhne Possena are rare and the destruction they cause is now at a minimum. However, every once in a while a Mage will be sighted. Remember, if you see a Possena, turn them in!

Note: For ease in reading the writer will refer to Tekhne Possena as Mages.

Culture

Mages are an interesting group of people. Many of them were seen throughout the towns and villages, but many of them didn't seem to interact with one another, which makes many people think that Mages worked alone, and didn't interact with anyone, unless necessary.

However, the writer has done some in-depth research and knows that is not true. Mages are secretive people, but they usually share their ways of destructive methods with their fellow mages. One thing that many people don't know about Mages is that they have secret gatherings, and in these secret gatherings they teach people below their class different spells they've learned, or potions they've managed to make.

One of the reasons, why the writer personally thinks other Mages do not acknowledge each other, outside of these meetings, is for secrecy. If someone doesn't think, they know, care, or are related to another magic user, then there is a higher chance that other Mage will be safe.

Hierarchy

One of the important things in the Mages culture was the hierarchy. This hierarchy was based on how much magic a person could do. The more powerful you were, the better you were, the higher up in the social ladder.

However, the higher up in the hierarchy the more responsibility you had. For example, a warlock was expected to attend every gathering, because of their knowledge and experience. Along with attending they were supposed to do a address, or teach on some subject of magic. Whether it be a quick run through of the basics, or a new spell the Warlock had made.

Ordered from Highest to Lowest
  1. Warlock -- Warlocks are extremely rare, even before Mages were realized as a threat. Warlocks are now considered to no longer exist and impossible to become.

  2. Wizard or Sorcerer -- These two are on the same level of power, but are slightly different in power. A Wizard is more subtly evil, while a Sorcerer shows it off to the world. This group is known to have caused the most damage to villages and towns

  3. Mage -- The Mage is a level that is most common to the world. Mages are usually seen as wise old men, but Mages are the ones most people are wary of, because a Mage could be anyone, and you would never know it.

  4. magician -- The magician is not anything to worry about. A magician can't do any real dangerous magic. This level is what most people would call an apprentice, where the magician simply watches and learns.

Powers

The powers of each Mage is said to vary from person to person. Most however have a basic understanding of their magic and how it works. Many people, including the writer, can only guess and make assumptions on how the Mages get their magic based on experiences and re-tellings of Mage sightings.

But there is one thing that everyone knows about the Mages' powers. They get their power from gods.

History

How Mages came about is not fully known or understood. Most people think that they were originally cursed by the gods to live a life of solitude with a power that would kill them from the inside out. However, Mages do not live in solitude and many people believe that Mages are able to live much longer than a regular human, if they didn't kill themselves with thier horribly destructive powers.

So that is not the case, instead many people, including the writer, think that Mages found a way to call upon the gods, and trick them into giving them powers. The Mages then used that power for selfish reasons.

After Mages started to become known around the kingdoms, many people didn't see them as a threat. As long as they stayed away from the villages and towns, the Mages were not something people worried about. However, one day a Mage was walking through town and, as rumor has it, bought a bag of apples. The Mage walked away from the apple cart and just as the Mage walked out of town the cart burst into flames.

People turned to the Mage and blamed him for the cause. After all, it couldn't have been anyone else. There was no fire that could have lit the apple cart up so randomly. Only a person with magic could have done something like that. But it wasn't until about ten years later, when whole villages started to burn down. Women and children started to die, and men were losing their livelyhoods.

It was about that time, Mages were seen as a threat. Over the course of 7 years the Tekhne Possena were hunted down and killed for their crimes.

In the present day, no one has seen a Mage since. And even if there are still Mages in this world, they don't dare show their faces. And people are okay with that. After all the destruction they have caused, they don't deserve to walk among men.

I, Akeyla, am glad that our dear writing friend wrote this article. Mainly because if I had written it I would have given an accurate depiction of my magical companions, but because someone insisted that this be from a human's perspective I was not allowed to write the article.

I'm sure you're as disappointed as me, but even if you're not, that's okay. I'm sure the dear writer will let me write an accurate article about my wizardry friends in the near future.
