Badge of Valour: Mean Green

The Badge of Valour: Mean Green, was a service award presented to all of those who fought on the ill-fated Mean Green Campaign.   As with all Badges of Valour, it is a gold medal with gold clasp, suspended from a ribbon designed in two differing shades of green, representing the jungle world upon which the campaign was fought. The dark of the two greens is used for the two vertical stripes that runthe length of the ribbon, each representing the two regiments assigned to the campaign

The campaign ended a number of years ago, and so is no longer awarded   (In games terms, it represents any unit thatfought in a campaign game in 6th and 7th editions of 40k)

History

Prior to the Great Rift, two regiments- 1st Iceni Expeditionary Regiment and 3rd Kuati Mobile Infantry Regiment - were deployed to a jungle world codenamed "Mean Green" to deal with hostile forces there, at the behest of the Inquisition. What happened there is now sealed under an Inquisitiorial decree, but what is known is that the regiments involved found themselves soon running rearguard actions after a surpise attack by an unknown Necrontyr force.   Casualty rates were astronomical. The entire 1st IEF Regiment were wiped out and, as the expedition commander, their leader Lord Thesian Spartar was posthumously decalred guilty of failure to command with his entire household on Iceni Minor stricken from the lists of nobility and placed in penal colonies.   Those few of the MI who survived suffered a different fate and were inducted into the retinue of the Ordo Xenos Inquisitor who soon decalred exterminatue on the world, reducing it to an asteroid field

Significance

To be awarded this, a guardsman, guardswoman, rating, officer or servant of the Departmento Munitorum must have been deployed in an active combat zone on Mean Green. This award is not recognised by the Astartes who fought in the system for they have their own awards and commendations. Multiple deployments do not garner a further award.   The award also indicated it's recipient is deemed under the protection of the Ordo Xenos
