The Leyfinder

Shortly after the appearance of the first Nightwell, while Mazot had himself locked away in that damnable tower of his in the whispering hills, he began his research into the void. This research led to the discovery of a device that could not only locate the Nightwells themselves, but the lines of power drawn between them which could supercharged a wizard's spellcasting ability. In the case of lesser magic users this power proved to be too much to handle, but Mazot, being the great wizard he was, found it quite useful for his own purposes. This device, he found, could be used not only to locate the Nightwells, but to find the lines of power that ran between them, and along those lines he found rifts that led into the void itself.

Utility

The device is planted into the ground, and magical energy channeled through it(this is only used to expedite the process of locating a leyline, it will eventually work on its own even without magic). The device will lean toward the nearest confluence of void-related energy.
Inventor(s)
The Great Wizard, Mazot
Access & Availability
At the moment, there are very few in the world--the original, created by Mazot, and the copy created by Olivaste, patron god of thieves, who made another for his champion.
Complexity
Though the device is nearly impossible to create without great knowledge of both magic and the void, it can be used by most everyone.
Discovery
During Mazot's research into the nightwell, he crossed through a rift into the void. Understandable, considering the rifts are entirely invisible to those who have never visited the realm. He was stuck there for several years, until he had finally run completely through his power and was left with nothing but the simplest of ritual magic, which he used to create a device he hoped would lead him toward a way out of the void.
