Eden Ward
Also known as an "Eden Shell". Large metal columns sticking out of the ground with dishes that face inwards. They can be found around the oldest cities. Some are intact while many more are broken. Time and the elements have weathered away any writing that might have been on it. Some still buzz with power.
These are the remnants of defense measures from the World Before. The People of Before knew the Cataclysm was coming. They brainstormed different ways for humanity to survive. One of the ways they came up with was to shield self (or close to it at least) sustaining communities with special barriers or force fields that would hopefully protect against everything they could think of.
When they were new, Eden Ward were massive pieces of sophisticated machinery. Monoliths were placed in a ring at consistent points around the settlement, they stretched far above and below the ground. Because of the limited time the People of Before had to produce the Eden Ward, the monoliths were its components base color and rather ugly looking. The Eden Ward system itself was deep underneath the settlement. The Eden Shell ran on its own power system. If connected to the settlement grid, it would draw all the energy within a few minutes. The outer layer of the monoliths were very sturdy/enduring solar panels. These panels were able to absorb massive amounts of solar energy and direct it to an energy reservoir. This energy storage was backup for the settlement.
During the Cataclysm, the Eden Ward successfully completed its objective, even beyond expected parameters. Unfortunately, this was not enough to stave off disaster in some cases. As the ground rose, some of the monoliths over heated and fizzled out, some fractured, and some broke completely. All that remains of them today: are a few working monoliths, solar panels, the crumbled remains jetting out of the ground, and a vague legend. Some settlements are able to still utilize the solar panels. Anything other than that is beyond societies current knowledge.
