The Mournfrost War

Before the war started, Windari had a variety of different names, with each of it's 5 major tribes calling it something different. While these alternate names are lost to time, the events that led up to the Mournfrost war, are clear.

The Conflict

Prelude

Windari was originally split into 5 tribes, The Bladinkins, Clan Truic, The Crowsmen, Clan Khillsink, and The Seahawks. All individuals with their own forms of living in the harsh winters of Windari, these groups often attacked each other as the seasons grew colder to gather whatever supplies another had collected, hoping to last the winter while simultaneously bringing down their rivals. These 5 tribes, which is further detailed within Windari history, had been surviving and fighting each other for an estimated 200 years, and some references to other, older and destroyed tribes, such as the "Kikdodo" and "Traktoo" were completely destroyed, with little evidence of their cultures still remaining.   Around 1840 First Arrival Era (FAE) however, a more dire threat was slowly building power within the far reach of the forever snow covered Witgate Mountains. Sending out kobolds to scavenge battlefields, Utgarda Reborn was planning on using the fighting tribes against each other, raising dead warriors under his command. Kobold activity was and still is not rare within Windari however, and if any body-snatching kobolds were found, they were killed without question as to their motives. Due to their plentiful numbers and fervent desire to help their patient dragon lord, an army was quietly, steadily built over 7-10 years.

Deployment

An undead army amassed, Utgarda began to test his warriors against the defenses of the tribes. Utilizing his great wit, the undead dragon would slowly move his armies across the landscapes of the wildlands and away from his mountains, destroying small villages and prodding at the defenses of larger settlements. With these tactical shifts, the source of the undead was unclear and seemingly random to most of the tribes, and for nearly an entire year, these surprise attacks would take out large chunks of each tribe's population as they moved further and further south where attacks happened much less frequently due to the Witgate Mountains distance, though this reasoning was unknown to the tribes.   The 5 major tribes, all now in closer proximity then ever before, with constant attacks from seemingly endless hordes year round, began to fight amongst themselves regularly, all desperate for food and space. With the slowly improving undead forces due to Utgarda's constant experimentation on freshly delivered bodies from destroy villages, the now smarter and more skilled undead began to form noticeable ranks, and even began to issue commands during raids, finally tipping off to each of the dwindling tribes that there was likely a greater force at work than bad luck, or an angry, unknown deity. The tribe leaders all came together, and an agreement would be formed.

Battlefield

First King Trok of the warrior poet tribe, the Bladinkins, earned his place as Warchief of the temporarily united tribes by defeating The Crowsmen chief, Lorenzo, in combat. Together, all the 5 tribes began to intermingle, teaching each other their crafts of raiding, smithing, animals, and defense. They began to stockpile together, and with great effort, united their tribes into a single massive city near the coast (now modern day Koranes). A steady defense was set up against the nightly onslaughts, and the Seahawks began construction of massive oar driven ships to deploy scouting parties. As conflict grew steadily more consistent, violent, and dangerous, the unified city was at risk of falling when finally the source of the undead was found, 3 years into the siege. Taking his strongest troops, First King Trok filled 6 boats with men, and began their trek north to the lair of Utgarda, hoping the city would last until they returned.   With less then 200 men, the group took apart their ships, and used the rigging to climb the mountain and the wood of their hulls to survive the blizzard that was now a permanent feature of the Witgate Mountains. After losing 30 men attempting to reach the dragons lair, they took one final night to rest before storming his lair. They raided the dragons tomb, and against all odds, 18 men emerged, the source of the undead defeated. They retook their spots from the night before getting ready to somehow travel through Windari winter, with no ships or supplies, to return to their possibly destroyed home. It is here that the story "White as Dragon Bone" is said to have been written.
