Dying and the Afterlife
Death is not the end on Sinstram, and quite often, may lead to new realms with unique rules and cultures.
After Realms
After Realms is the name given to other planes of existence primarily used to store or house the undead spirits and identities once they die. The Boneyard is the primary realm these spirits go to and is often considered a purgatory and waiting room for spirits to be collected from by their respective gods or owners. Each God however often has their own After Realm, representing their divine domains. Tetuna's realm is often depicted as rolling hills overgrown by crops and plentiful lakes, while Twin Aris and Twin Lovil's realm is said to be an impossibly large gothic cathedral filled with endless rows of books and art.Ghosts
If a soul has a strong enough pull to remain in the mortal realm without outside intervention, it is likely it become a ghost or haunt. The causes can vary greatly but often require a strong emotional reason or connection to an object, place, or event to remain. A lover, killed by her newlywed husband may find herself haunting the church she was married in until she is avenged, is convinced to forgive him, or by other more specific actions. A community, suddenly wiped out by a landslide may have a myriad of lesser souls wandering the ruins each night, as the collection of fear, pain, and death has caused the location to become so charged with supernatural energy, that it simply cannot dissipate without outside intervention. Generally, a ghost does not understand the passage of time and may vary in understanding of their situation, their death, or even the fact that they are dead. Depending often on the temperament of their mortal form, they may lash out in anger, and confusion, or break down in tears if ever convinced of their ghostly state. It is rare for a ghost to also retain any knowledge of passing events, such as a group of travelers that laid rest in their haunt just a few hours ago. As a result, ghosts often can provide little, if any information outside of the years leading up to their death, but in some cases, may not even recall that. A ghost without memory often is violent, and angry, and seeks to dwindle its rage however possible, which often means attacking living things with reckless abandon as living creatures are the easiest thing for them to sense and track.
