Coalrite

Coalrite is a Romanian inspired underground civilization focused on titles, respect, and privacy.

Sometimes, i wonder if the Coalrite people miss the sun, or are simply afraid of it. What compels a people to live in the dark?-

Coalrite is a country painfully rigid in it's cultural norms, but is currently facing some growing tensions on it's borders as a result of the Fieldtan Revolution.

Discovery

Coalrite was "discovered" when Woadpress sent settlers to claim new land for their blossoming empire in the early First World Era (FAE). When the first 2 settlements were destroyed without a trace besides crossbow bolts, ashes, and a note pinned to the chapel door (the only thing left standing in the settlement). Unfortunately for Woadpress, dwarven was a totally unknown language, never seen before by its human and elvish inhabitants, and as such they were unable to read the simple message "This is land of the Coalrite meritocracy."

As Coalrite had no above-ground cities or towns, the landscape looked untouched and ripe for the taking. By the point of this first contact however, they already had 4 cities and was the most populous nation in the world. Unknown to Woadpress, and assuming the doing of bandits, an army was sent with the next settlers, and it resulted in "The Battle of the Lost Village" when the caravan was attacked before even arriving at it's final location. The dwarvish force seemingly emerged from nowhere in the large fields, routed and scattered Woadpress forces, and effectively started the "First Contact War".

First Contact War

While the first year of the war was mostly irregular fights and skirmishes along the borders of modern Coalrite, it would later evolve into multiple long sieges as Coalrite used it's impressive military engineers to construct complex forts in a matter of months. It's theorized that a full engineer corps could break ground and fully construct a functional, defensible position within 12 weeks. As a result, it quickly became a regular effort on Coalrite's end to construct dozens of forts all within half a days march of each other, and regularly trap terrain in areas that would be easiest for large forces to travel along.

Despite being the "aggressor" in some people's eyes, it's important to note that over the course of 3 1/2 years it took the First Contact War to resolve, there was only a single recorded instance of Coalrite leaving its own borders with soldiers.
