They met at the SRRF facility where Ace was kept. Noire was transferred there after being promoted, and the two of them met during Noire's cybernetics training. They bonded over their shared love and understanding of science and technology, but that quickly developed into a friendship that subverted their superiors' power over them. Noire convinced Ace that he was being treated less than human, and they helped him escape. Their relationship was platonic for a few years, but Scorpio helped the two of them realize what they were feeling for each other.
