The Koboldkin

General Info

Noted to be not one race but multiple combined into a loose nation of individuals cursed with the greed of dragons but lacking in the power to obtain more. It is believed that the kobold nation is more akin to what we call dragonkin, however due to the full documentation at the time, we have decided to stand with the classification given by the leading members of The Collective Pyrus States. Though known for their strange obsession with valuable gems and metals, the kobolds were one of the most diverse races and nations overall. In fact some even believe that what we known today as the "Common Tongue" was actually invented by the Unified Kobold Kinship. As it is noted that while many scholars believe that dwarvish was where the "Common Tongue" would originate due to the vedan influence in the change between The Collective Pyrus State and Champions of Pyrus. It is becoming more likely as we research into the First Age that the draconic "High Tongue" would mix with vastly different draconic tongues from other regions of the world, thus creating the first "Common Tongue" and even further the "Lower Tongue" as many of the deep kobolds would begin to learn more of their surface kin.

City info

Here we shall list the specific city info if any is listed for the cities history.

King's End

A city founded deep within the forested hills of the kobold lands, said to be the capital and only city of true note within the territory. Though clans controlled vast amounts of the territory, no official settlements were built outside of King's End in the beginning of the first age. As it is believed that Zakris Vulpo wanted to open the world up to the kobold nation and bring greater wealth to his people who believed they could become dragons through it. Deep beneath the city it is said that those who find themselves in these tunnels will meet the one known as Pale Eye. Many adventurers who thought it an easy bounty to take on the great beholder found themselves cut down or enslaved for the greater good of the kobolds kingdom. The city was known to have large amounts of guards who had once been adventurers now controlled by the city and set to guard it forever. Though you would believe this would keep seekers of fortune and fame away, however the city of King's End is said to have been extremely busy port town. With architecture that was said to be so precise it left one weeping upon viewing it, like a paradise the city sports gardens of exotic materials never seen before on the material plane. Smiths who work with metals thought to have never been possible, large schools dedicated to the understanding of magic. Though the underdark of the city is noted as one of the few zone that even the dragons dare not intrude upon without an army to back them. As it is said, the beholder colony that lays beneath the city is the greatest threat or savior depending on how well they are treated throughout history.

Technology periods

Here we shall discuss the main technological discoveries by this race.

Beholder Bounders

A rare mutation said to happen amongst the kobold priests who serve The Pale Eye directly. Those blessed with the third stock eye that would begin to appear as the months of exposure continued, would allow the mutated to bond to a beholder. This beholder would then be said to serve those who it had bonded with. However, noting that this only worked with beholders of lesser capability then most, a village idiot if you will. Though as they say, even a village idiot with a petrification spell can become a legend if given the right situation. Thus some amongst the kobolds have begun to study the art in hopes of taming the beholders to them and using there vast knowledge to build a society far beyond what any other could be capable of.

Hierarchy

Here we shall discuss how the overall ladder of power is designed in this races territories.

Dragonkin

Known as the highest ranked of the kobold nation, this subspecies was the most draconic like. Standing on average 12ft tall, and with wingspans that were almost double their height. These creatures are noted as the nobles and high society leaders of the kobold race. Though proud, the dragonkin resemble their parents the most and more often then not act similar to there parents. Causing many to look down on the others, and having power beyond their lesser kin. Though they are far and few between in the nation as many of the dragons prefer to keep dragonkin as foot soldiers and govenors of territory. As it is noted that dragonkin seem to serve most dragons in hopes of one day becoming one.

Drakekin

The lesser of the pureblooded as they are referred to by the lesser kobolds. Noted for their massive size both in height and width, the average drakekin would stand 14ft tall and half as wide. Bearing no wings, and almost always chromatic, the drakekin see themselves as the natural rulers of all around them. Proud, powerfully built, and commanding, though uniquely the most common to find in the slave pens of most dragons. As due to their obscene pride of being draconic, they make great slave guardsman and watchers, believing they are helping there stronger brethren. Though it should be noted that when they finally break free of the mentality drakekin can be found as strong commanders and warriors amongst the kobold nations.

Wyvernkin

Noted for being like their dragonkin brethren, standing on average 12ft tall and with wingspans that were about the same. The Wyvernkin unlike the dragonkin had their wings attached directly to their arms, thus the strange creatures could either have their wings spread out or arms, but not both at the same time. Though inferior to their dragonkin brethren in flying speed, they make up for it in sheer numbers. As wyvernkin are commony born as triplets to a dragon who has tried to lay with a powerful wyvern. Though the creatures keep their dragon parentages resistances and breath, they take on the appearance of a dragonkin with no wings. As they split their hands apart the wings seem to extend out like webbing, allowing for the race to fly. They are known for their pretentious attitude and are quick to anger at the comparison of them to there kin in any unfavorable light. The wyvernkin are noted to make up a majority of the dragonkin clans power as well as the majority of the flying kobolds within the territory.

Kobold

Believed to have been the lesser of dragonkin this actually may hold truth. While kobolds lose their wings in exchange for higher intelligence or charisma, they, like dragonkin still gain a draconic bloodline. As the only other subspecies of the two that are capable of eventually gaining the ability to become dragons, kobolds are nothing to look down upon. Noted for their shorter stature averaging 6ft tall at the highest, and weighing no more then 300lbs, most kobolds scale colors are simple and dull. With the sheer amount of kobolds born to many dragons who try to breed between two diferent dragon types. Kobolds are the only amongst their subspecies brethren who have a potential of inheriting two weaker breath weapons. Kobolds stood amongst the lowest ranks in the kobold species group and society as a whole. Though most often kobolds were the ones noted for their grander impacts on history compared to their more prideful kin.

Lizardkin

Known as the weakest of the drakekin, many believe that lizardkin are actually a crossbreed between kobolds and drakekin. As the lizardkin seem to inherit the height of the drakekin but the skinny and wirey frame of the kobolds. Many researchers have noted the creatures for their lack of intelligence but immense feral strength. As the creatures made up the lowest ranks of society, they were commonly used for labor and slave like duties, though some would grow intelligent enough to found hunting groups. The small businesses would inevitably end up either enslaved by a local clan or leave for mercenary work under an intelligent leader.

Nobility

Here we shall discuss notable noble houses through the time periods.

Zakris Vulpo

Born to a proud brown dragon clan, Zakris was noted for having watched his clan fall as he was sold into slavery. The young brown Kobold would later escape his captors in the Mov'asi's empire, and flee south, eventually getting a boat to the southern continent. Zakris is noted as having become a leader of multiple clans of kobolds and dominating the drake and dragonkin in the area. The powerful sorceror would later go on to conquer the entirety of the kobold clans, and with his legendary blade that he crafted called "Tyrant Slayer" the young leader would begin to reshape the histories of the kobold nation. Many believe that Zakris's great power comes from the strange beholder that lives within his nation. As the two seem to regularly meet, many advisors and visitors have noted the ancient appearing beholder even attending meetings between the various kobold clans. Zakris himself stands half as tall as an average dragonborne, with large arms and legs, many have noted him for his almost vedan like stockyness. Zakris is said to be a capable smith who practices his craft day and night, continously attempting to forge new items to slay the dragons with. As his hatred for those who rule the sky seems to burn greater then anything, with a want for power, revenge, and a hatred of those within the main continent of Crakec. Many believe the young warlord to be willing to cross the seas and conquer the lands himself once ready.

Royals throughout history

Here we shall mention royals that have a historical value of sorts.

Noteable Nobility

Here we shall discuss the current ages nobles and royals

First Age

Zohzu "The Four Blessed" Formdis
The top oath taker who serves The Pale Eye directly, Zohzu is a dragonkin of golden scale coloration. He is well known for his pride but immense capabilities amongst those sworn to the beholder. Zohzu has a unique or blessed mutation depending on your culture, with two eye stocks having grown from his head. He has begun to gain powers far beyond what he was once capable of and is noted as a threat to the leader of the Kobolds. Zohzu having watched as a mere weak kobold managed to do what he could not as they were born first, it was beyond his capability to understand. Zohzu can be noted for carrying a large gnarled staff that looks eerily similar to a dried eye stock, with a large obisidian black gemstone at the peak of it. He is also known for his heavy armor crafted and blessed by The Pale Eyed.
The Pale Eyed
Known for his large central eye that was blinded during a battle with one of the ancient dragons that once called the lands it's home. Ol Pale Eye as the kobolds call him is noted for his jolly nature, seeming to enjoy teaching young kobolds how to use magic and be proper amongst society. While seeming to have only twelve stocks, many have noted that Pale Eye has an extra stock that has grown out the back of the creature over the years. Having a strange rocky like substance gathering around it, none have yet to see what color the eye is or what it can do. It is said that The Pale Eyed is a beholder that is second only to cereseki in power during the first age but with a more nefarious plan. Many historians believed the creature interested in indoctronating the kobolds into it's hive as it continued to spend most of its ability dominating other beholders that it had dreamt up to serve it. Noted as being 22ft wide, the creature seems to be capable of spells beyond many of the mortals who serve it's understanding. Some historians still believe that The Pale Eyed is actually the first beholder, and after losing a battle with Cereseki to take over the niwarves at the time, that instead The Pale Eyed, now wounded, would head south to find an easier target with kinder ways of conversion. Due to this discovery, historians continue to believe that The Pale Eyed was indeed a hive mother born into the world due to a disturbance between gods of such power that a creature like this was forced to exist from the backlash.
Rogo Vulpo
Believed to have been the brother of Zakris, Rogo was born a drakekin with the same size of his brown dragon parent. Having been noted as so strong he was capable of pulling boulders the size of small towns out of the ground. Rogo was believed to have been the naturally expected leader of the kobold clans when he first arrived twenty years before his brother. Though due to his lack of understanding, the muscled warrior ended up tricked into the service of multiple wyvernkin and dragonkin, furthering each of their goals at court until catching onto the truth. Only to kill them moments after and watch as what he thought would now be his power would crumble as he did not understand how to maintain it. Many believe the large drakekin is aiming for his brothers throne just like all the others.

Noteable Royal Family

Notable Noble houses

Military

Here we will discuss any specific military information

Zakris Vulpo

Noted as having an army of 100 Dragonkin, 350 drakekin, 5,000 wyvernkin, 10,000 kobolds and 10,000 lizardkin all currently serving as active solders, with nearly double that in citizen milita, and lastly 1,000 slaves that can be mobilized.

The Pale Eyed

Noted as having an army of 10 Elder Orbs, 50 eyes of frost and flame each, 20,000 directors, 20 eye of the deeps, 10 observers and 200 overseers.

Oteos's Chosen

An order of oath takers who have given up their hearing within the first age in exchange for great power and service to the order. Those amongst it's ranks are numbered to be 600 paladins and 200 monks, with three capable high ranked oath takers noted as Zakris's Swords.

Wars

Here we shall discuss the notable wars for each period and who they were against.

Events/Holidays

We shall begin to discuss notable holidays and events in this culture. Explaining further on where they come from and what goes on during them.

Marriage

Kobolds were one of the few species that like dragons laid eggs, but unlike any other at the time the kobold mated for life. With this practice, seeking a mate was a driven instinct amongst the kobolds, almost considered animal like. As kobolds married for life or rather mated for life, it was believed that when the mate perished the other would seek their end in the most brutal fashion possible. Typically seeking out a strange monster hunting like mentality until killed by a great beast to atone for not dying with their mate. This was how deep the connection was considered between the two, thus while it was uncommon for kobolds to seek mates outside their scale color it was not unheard of nor looked down upon. Though it was considered an exilable offense for a kobold to mate outside their own subspecies, as concieved children would come out as abominations.

Religious beliefs

Here we shall discuss the different religious beliefs in this races history throughout the periods.

Ote

A gloom dragon like creature that has seemingly began to gain power deep within the lands of the unified kobold kingship. This dragon is said to be worshipped by the oath takers of Oteos's Chosen as the original spreader of the disease. Each member seemingly feeding themselves to the creature as their names appear upon the back of the creature in the form of a tombstone, forever remembered. Those of the order protect the old fat dragon that no longer chooses to move, many have noted the small group of mages who serve the creature directly. The dragon seems to offer powers to those of the order in exchange for its continued existance within the lands or so the stories go. However, as the years have gone on, Ote seems to have begun showing signs of divinity with so many worshippers and oath takers.

Known diseases

Here we shall discuss known diseases to be active and/or discovered or cured during the different time periods of these races

Oteos

A disease known to infect the ear canals of the kobold species, at which point they become inflamed and expand. Making it near impossible for a kobold to hear, those doomed with this strange disease are left with fevers and sometimes permanent loss of hearing. Though a strange minor cult around those who have lost their hearing has appeared within the kobold society. Giving rise to a minor oath taker order around the loss of hearing that serves their king directly.

Weak Back

A disease noted in the modern era as a disease of the bones in which the infected begins to lose the density of their bones as the strange bacteria lodges itself onto the bone and feeds. Many have noted that this would weaken the host and would eventually cause them to collapse under their own weight. The sounds of bone cracking and shattering like glass can be heard commonly amongst those in the later stages of the disease.

Aberrationism

Noted to be a disease passed onto those kobold who spent to long beneath the grounds in the beholder colony. Those who do are said to come back with strange mutations, powers, and sometimes enhanced abilities. Though no longer truly a kobold, those infected find themselves infertile and beginning to crave power over others. This strange disease seems to be common amongst most races who spend to long within beholder colonies.

Economy

Here we shall discuss the unique economics of different nations as needed.

Coins

Here we shall find how the coins look, what materials they are made of, and what the value of the coins are on the overall market.
DIAMOND CROWNS
The first coin that replaced the common platinum that the dragons used for its shininess. Giants though, are not dragons, thus the more common material of liquid diamonds would be harvested from the cores of the volcanoes in the heart of the magma as it was believed. This material would be farmed to make coins and other magical items.
RUBY VOLCANOS
Believed to be equivalent to the gold piece commonly used by the lesser nations including dragons. Thus the Jotun-Modr pioneered the coin in the shape of their homeland to be used by those sworn to them. These simple coins are individually 5cm by 5cm like the other coins, however it is clear and seems to sparkle from its craftsmanship only possible by the Jotun-Modr who individually made each coin.
SAPPHIRE HILLS
Sapphire hills were thinner coins due to there higher rarity, though most giants valued sapphires less then rubies and only slightly more then emeralds. Thus most recognized this simple hill drawn with sheep grazing into the individual sapphires as a silver coin.
EMERALD PLAINS
Lastly and most common in the Jotun-Modr volcanos were emeralds. As the material was farmed simply from their individual Rok-heap herds. Thus simple grass would be carved into the coins as apprentices practiced there arts on the coins.

Trade Goods

Here you shall find the trade goods this race has on offer in the nations they inhabit.

Owlbears

A species that can be found almost anywhere. However, they are rare to find as the owl bears are continously hunted for their magical properties. And many would be animal poachers have found a large amount of wealth in the darker alleys selling owl bear eggs.

Leviathan

Fish that walked on four legs and shoot lightning out of there mouths. Said to be used by the kobolds to power deep underground facilities within the beholder colonies. These creatures are also noted for being ridden into battle for the capable ranger or druid. However, when they attack they seem to shoot off witch bolts continuously almost similarly to magic missles.

Tungsten Items

Tungsten is a greyish-white lustrous metal, which is a solid at room temperature. Tungsten has the highest melting point and lowest vapor pressure of all metals, and at temperatures over 1650°C has the highest tensile strength. It has excellent corrosion/rust resistance and is affected only slightly by most acid spells. Though noted at the time to be rare to find a kobold capable of creating such heat, it is rumored that the leaders of the kobolds in the first age were capable of breathing fire hot enough for a short time to melt and heat tungston. Though the process took multiple powerful kobolds, it is said that a single item would take weeks to craft. But when crafted, one could not ask for a stronger non magical item. Noted for their immunity to all spell effects, but not being able to carry any natural spells. The tungston items are capable of resisting rust breath up to an ancient rust dragon, however they are incapable of being enchanted.

Other Characters of note

Here we shall discuss other characters of note directly influence this race.

Anatomy

Here we shall both provide a design as well as an explanation of the anatomy of the race in question.     (image of race)

Ability score increase

You gain a +2 in whichever is the highest stat of your draconic parent, and a +1 in whatever their second highest is. If there are multiple you may choose.

Age

Kobolds all aged at half there dragon parentages lifespan. However, dragonkin and drakekin were able to in rare cases claim up to three fourths of the lifespan of their dragon parents.

Phenotypes

Similarly to height and weight, most kobolds varied in color. Though the truth was that they most commonly fell within the color range of their parentage. With red dragon born kobolds coming out with varients of red in both directions.

Height and Weight

Height and weight can range extremely between the different kobold species, allowing for a wide range of heights and weights. Many drakekin are noted to be larger and stronger then dragonborne, while most kobolds stand at a quarter to half the height of a dragonborne. The same aspect is true of weight, with many choosing to live individualistic lives due to there draconic pride. Kobolds took extreme interest in their appearance of scale color and strength through physical or magic manipulation.

Alignment

Though noted as most often Chaotic Good, many scholars have noted that in the first age the race was most commonly found to follow a code of martial conduct amongst there kin. Thus it is not uncommon to have a lawful evil kobold.

Speed

All Kobolds start with a base 30 speed, and increase/decrease by five feet, for every ten feet the dragon they draw ancestry from had.

Founding

Here we shall explain when the race came to be, how it came to be, and whom it is credited to and where.   The Kobolds are said to have always lived in the southern continent of Selmica and to have existed as long as there have been dragons. A species considered to be a curse upon a dragon for committing a taboo to offend Ked-Liz, the kobolds were almost always thrown out of their clans nesting grounds. Some were even killed on the spot once hatched, those few that were capable of escaping being enslaved by hunters or killed on site by other nations or races found themselves drawn to the southern lands of Selmica. Here it is said that The Pale Eyed was discovered by one of the kobold clans led by Zakris Vulpo. With the help of the ancient beholder, the young kobold leader would find himself cutting down clan leaders all across the territory until finally unifying with his brother and using him to finish off the last of the resistance just as The Pale Eyed had predicted. With the conquest of so many clans a city was needed and thus established above the colony of beholders who ruled the underdark. A church put atop the entrance and here it is said that those who serve the colony directly remain within. The rest of the lands would spend their time throughout the first age with both difficulties from the crystal and frost jotun's as they battled for dominance for the continent in a hopes to avoid what would come.   Info to still be edited
