House Artonis

Grow in traditions, Bloom in Power

House Artonis, a powerful family in Rod, Avan'Wanor's portuary capital, is the latest family that has joined the ruling Council of Eight, being promoted to the rare rank of a House. House Artonis members are known for their extraordinary expertise in herbs (that some call magical), the sprawling Florarium they have built and their major political and military influence. Led by Lord Aric Artonis and Lady Seraphina Artonis, they compete fiercely with House Sylviere for influence within the Council of Eight. With their motto "Grow in traditions, Bloom in Power", House Artonis weaves their magical skills, political maneuvers, and economic prowess to secure their place as a formidable force in Rod's political landscape.

Following their arrival in Rod from a unknown foreign land, the Artonis had humble beginnings with a small herborist shop. However, their exceptional skills and noble demeanor quickly drew attention within the city. Their unique customs and well-crafted goods set them apart, establishing them as a noteworthy presence in Rod.   Recognizing their potential, the Council of Seven approached the family, seeking their assistance as a "neutral" emissary during the 3 Lakes War. Their involvement in the conflict, particularly the pivotal Arus Fall battle and their role in the subsequent Treaty of Azel, firmly established House Artonis as a significant political force within Avan'Wanor.      In another display of their abilities, the family was tasked with aiding the High-hills County, a remote region in need of revitalization. Through the implementation of their revolutionary irrigation system and the introduction of new seeds, the county experienced unprecedented harvest seasons. Rumors circulated that House Artonis' involvement, whether through their "magical" skills or advanced agricultural techniques, played a significant role in the remarkable yield and quality of the harvest.   With their growing influence and recognition among the people of Rod, House Artonis solidified their position as a prominent family. In a significant move, they arranged a marriage between one of their sons and a member of House Sylviere, marking their entry into the court of the ruling Houses.   House Artonis subsequently took on the role of "agrarian stewards", responsible for managing agrarian politics throughout the counties. Their expertise in agricultural matters and their ability to navigate political landscapes further elevated their reputation and influence.      With the support of popular sentiment and aided by House Sylviere, their closest ally, House Artonis achieved a historic milestone by securing a seat on the Council. This marked the first time a family had ascended to House status since the creation of Avan'Wanor. Evangeline Artonis, known as the Silver Shield, emerged as a promising figure and was appointed as the Council's Intendent, effectively becoming the head of state and the face of the entire country. However, her nomination over the Sylviere heir caused tension and was seen as a betrayal by the Sylviere family.   Evangeline's reign was marked by significant policy changes that garnered mixed reactions among the populace. Tragically, she fell ill shortly after, eventually passing away, far from the people who had fervently supported and admired her.      In the aftermath of her death, House Artonis continued to expand their influence and networks, delving into both legitimate and illicit activities. Presently, the new head of House Artonis, Aric, supported by his two daughters, Rosalind and Seraphina, is determined to seize power once again, navigating the complex political landscape of Rod and vying for control in their quest for dominance.

In the early days of House Artonis' arrival in Rod, their involvement in the tumultuous 3 Lakes War became a defining chapter in their family's history.   The family played a vital role in supporting the war effort. They dedicated themselves to supplying field hospitals with medicinal herbs and essential supplies. While their contributions may not have been ostentatious, they were noted and appreciated by those on the frontlines.      Meanwhile, Leon Artonis, a young man barely known in his own district at the time, joined the regular troops and quickly earned a distinguished reputation on the battlefield. Famed for his unwavering bravery and light hearted spirit, he became a legend in his own right. As Leon fought alongside the renowned Arus the Preux in the historic Battle of Arus Fall, their combined valor turned the tides of the conflict. When the dust settled, Leon Artonis stood as the sole fighter left standing, a testament to his unyielding determination.

Recognizing the Artonis family's dedication and impartiality, they were chosen to serve as neutral emissaries during the war. This role bestowed upon them the responsibility of negotiating peace and fostering diplomatic relations. Magnus Artonis, as the family's patriarch and a skilled negotiator, played a pivotal role in the Treaty of Azel, where he worked to secure a lasting peace with Stjarna'Stoll and its allies.      Years later, the mantle of leadership passed to Evangeline Artonis, daughter of Leon, who demonstrated exceptional command during the conquest of the Island of Yaum. Her strategic acumen on the battlefield was applauded, but it was her revolutionary understanding of supply chains that truly set her apart. Recognizing the importance of logistics and the efficient management of resources, Evangeline's innovative approach ensured the success of the campaign and earned her widespread praise.   The involvement of House Artonis in the 3 Lakes War, from Leon's valiant martial exploits to their contributions in the negotiations and Evangeline's strategic brilliance, solidified their reputation as a family with a deep understanding of both the martial and logistical aspects of warfare. These experiences would shape their future endeavors and lay the foundation for their rise to prominence within the political landscape of Rod.

Evangeline Artonis, the Silver Shield, was once a remarkable leader that is still overwhelmingly loved by the vibrant city of Rod.   After years commanding on a battlefield, as a true heir of her illustrous ancestors, she got elected as Council's Intendent by her overwhelming popularity among the popultaion of Rod as well as her clever influence on election orders.   Her ruling was marked by great reforms in the chaotic administration of the young state of Avan'Wanor that was heavily corrupted. She launched numerous infrastructural projects as a mean of uniting the people and make them bond under the common flag of the Sons of E'Torrar.   Yet her mandate wasn't devoid of issues.   Whispers of an alleged affair began to circulate, casting a shadow of doubt over her reputation. Yet, undeterred by the rumors and gossip, she persisted in her mission to bring prosperity and harmony to Rod.   Although, it was not the only source of criticism directed at the Evangeline. She often stood firmly against the will of the majority of the Council, challenging their decisions and pushing forward her own reforms. This defiance of the established order ruffled feathers among the traditionalists who believed she should adhere to the expected role of a Council's Intendent : executiong the politics decided by the Council, make them work and answer before the Council of their success or failure.   Moreover, the Silver Shield's ascension to power was not without controversy. She seemingly "stole" the position that should have rightfully gone to the heir of House Sylviere, a move that sparked resentment and accusations of usurping authority. House Sylviere felt betrayed by the unexpected turn of events, fueling a deep animosity between the two families.   Under the guise of cleaning the corruption within the state apparatus, the Silver Shield maneuvered to benefit her own family and facilitated shady deals that served their interests. While she championed policies that resonated with the common people, her actions behind the scenes were not entirely spotless.   She layed the foundations of the current "blue sails trade", accelerated centralisation of power to Rod, leaving the province leaders either powerless or making them agents of the state, entirely reformed the militia, putting friendly figures in key positions and ensuring some shady deals would be preserved from any investigation.   Evangeline Artonis navigated a delicate balance, managing to maintain the love and support of the populace through her skillful implementation of populist politics. However, beneath the veneer of populism, her reign was marred by compromises and decisions that served her family's ambitions.

However, despite her fame and glory, fate had a cruel twist in store. The Silver Shield fell gravely ill, and the cause of her ailment remained a mystery. Some whispered that she had been poisoned, while others suspected more sinister forces at play. It was said that her soon to be discovered lover, desperate to save her life, turned to forbidden magic and sought the help of Aris, her husband, in procuring the necessary herbs and delving into dark arts.   Their clandestine efforts, though born out of love, were discovered, and tragedy struck. The lover, accused of practicing witchcraft, met a grim fate at the hands of the authorities. His entire family was burnt at the stakes in front of the Council, right under the windows of the ill Intendent that could only hear their screams from her bed, and their name erase from the records. Meanwhile, the Silver Shield's health continued to deteriorate, and despite the efforts of healers and well-wishers, she eventually passed away, far from the people who adored and supported her.      Her untimely demise left a void in the hearts of the citizens of Rod. They mourned the loss of a leader who had embodied hope and progress, someone who had dedicated herself to their well-being. The circumstances surrounding her death remained shrouded in secrecy, fueling speculation and intrigue that lingered in the city's collective memory.
Amid the intricate power dynamics of the Council, a delicate balance has been maintained to prevent any single family from wielding complete financial control. A silent understanding exists that the management of metal mines and the minting of coins should not fall under the jurisdiction of the same family. This precaution ensures a crucial equilibrium within the Council, preventing any one family from monopolizing financial power.
To further ensure this balance, the Hammerers, the esteemed coiners responsible for minting the city's currency, must keep their independence from the Houses. They are an autonomous entity, answering only to the Exarchs and the Council's Intendent. This separation from familial influence is a safeguard against any family gaining undue control over the coinage and the financial system.      However, rumors persist of House Artonis quietly breaching this unspoken rule. They have acquired most of the Eastern mines, renowned for their abundant gold production. It is also whispered that they have managed to forge favorable relationships with the Hammerers. Through bureaucratic manipulations and bribery, House Artonis has managed to place a close associate in the administration of the Hammerers, further solidifying their grip on financial matters.   These developments have raised suspicions among the other Houses, who question whether House Artonis harbors ambitions of establishing a financial monopoly. The concern lies in the potential consequences of a single family gaining unchecked control over the city's wealth and resources, disrupting the delicate equilibrium that has been carefully preserved.

In addition to their alleged maneuvers within the mining and minting industries, whispers circulate about House Artonis engaging in questionable practices to evade taxes. Their flour production is said to be subject to deceptive tactics aimed at avoiding taxation. They present it at the gates of Rod as an "internal good relocation without mercantile intent," exploiting a loophole that exempts such import from taxes. This method raises eyebrows among those who question the true motivations behind House Artonis' actions as they most certainly do produce and sell bread and pasteries. Some people start suspecting a deliberate effort from House Artonis to amass wealth while sidestepping their civic responsibilities.   Among the more dubious rumors is the clandestine importation of contraband goods through the city's sewers. While these claims border on conspiracy theory, some voices argue that House Artonis exploits their extensive network and influence to engage in illicit trade hidden from the prying eyes of authorities. Whether these rumors hold any truth remains uncertain, but the whispers persist, adding an air of intrigue and suspicion to House Artonis' already controversial reputation.   As with any speculation, it is essential to approach these claims with caution and seek concrete evidence. However, the murmurs surrounding House Artonis' potential encroachment on financial matters, their alleged efforts to avoid taxes, and their relationship with the Hammerers have not gone unnoticed. The delicate equilibrium within the Council of Eight teeters, and the actions of House Artonis invite scrutiny, leaving many to wonder whether they are merely ambitious players within the political landscape or if their pursuit of power is intertwined with a grander, more clandestine agenda.
