Blade
- A metal is chosen, usually for strength and sharpness.
- Bronze: This is common when ancient daggers.
- Iron: Stronger and sharper than bronze, and very durable. Most common metal used in current daggers.
- Obsidian: Used mostly for ceremonial daggers. They have a natural sharpness ot them, but they tend to be brittle. Mordoth has fortified his with black magick, making it stronger than most
Hilt
- Guard: This is a horizontal bar between the blade and the grip, typically made of the same metal as the blade. It is designed to protect the wielder’s hand, from both the blade and other weapons.
- Grip: The handle, designed for comfort and control.
- Wood: A popular material, often carved and wrapped for grip.
- Bone: Usually used for ceremonial, adding beauty and prestige.
- Leather: Frequently wrapped around the grip for better hold and comfort.
Pommel
A weighted cap at the end of the hilt. It balances the dagger and serves as a striking tool in close combat. Materials include:- Iron: For balance and durability.
- Gemstone: In ornamental daggers, for decoration and prestige.
Sheath
The protective cover for the blade, often as important as the dagger itself. Common materials include:- Leather: Lightweight and durable, often reinforced with metal at the tip or opening.
- Wood: Carved to fit the blade precisely, sometimes covered with leather or metal.
- Metal: Used for ceremonial or high-end daggers, offering full protection and an ornate appearance.
History
The dagger is one of the oldest tools, tracing its origins to the early days of Tangwyn. The early daggers served as versatile tools. They were used for hunting, cutting, and the occasional combat, especially in close quarters.
Material has changed over time, ie bronze to iron, making them stronger and more durable. They have become invaluable on and off the battlefield. This weapon has played a crucial role throughout history. Some daggers are ceremonial, adorned with precious stones.
As magick ability progressed, some daggers were imbued with magick, such Seanna's lifestealing dagger that keeps it and its mte sharp without ever needing a sharpening stone. Unfortunately, this particular skill was lost after the Civil War.
