Rider Epitaphs

This text was transcribed by Patrick and Pale Moon from plaques on statues of Ro's Riders of Death in the Torovian Arcane Ward.

Theobold Longroth, the Loyal

Theobold Longroth was the first mortal we know of to be plucked from the Mortal Realm and raised to the station of Rider of Death by Ro, ruler of the Shadowfell and goddess of death, war, shadow, art, and toil . He took on the mantle of Bellum, Rider of War. He left us too soon however, as it was not long after his departure that the great war began, and his absence on the battlefield was felt greatly. It is believed he was eventually destroyed, as when Ro’s riders took the field in the great war, Bellum showed no mercy to his Torovian ancestors. Either he was destroyed or betrayed by the gods, the only beings powerful enough to bestow the title of Death’s Horsemen on another. We honor his memory here, and it is his great deed of achieving immortality that we hope to replicate here.

Morbus, Rider of Damnation

Morbus, the title bestowed upon the Rider of Damnation. It is said that their purpose is to keep out damned souls on the Mortal Realm and bring them back in chains to the Shadowfell, where they will suffer for all eternity. It is said that the first to take the title was a valiant angel, whom Ro plucked from Elysium to spite her beloved Celestine.

Famis, Rider of Desolation

Famis, the title bestowed upon the Rider of Desolation. It is said that their purpose is to raze the oldest parts of the land, sundering the earth, burning the forests, parting the seas, in order to do away with the old and make way for the new to take its place. It is said that the first to take the title of Famis was Chiros, a child of Sindar who took the form a horse. It is said that they were the father of all nightmares. They also have been said to be a bearer of disease, for when a civilization grows too great in number, disease will always thin the herd.

Mortem, Rider of Time

Mortem, the title bestowed upon the Rider of Time. It is said that their purpose is to be an end to all things mortal. They are said to pull up the sun and moon each night, and bring them back down, to ensure that even the most powerful mortals will one day perish, if they escape death on the battlefield, hunger, or disease. It is said that the first to bear the title of Mortem was an archdevil from Hell. These beings of order lusted over the idea of taking this mantle, as it would allow them to instill order on a much greater scale.
