Mosstown Dossier

This dossier, organized by Kairus, contains all the documents recovered from Mosstown in New Torovia by various adventurers.

Weaver's Sanctum Notes

This is a packet of arcane research recovered from the Arcane Foundry in the Weaver's Sanctum in Mosstown, New Torovia.     Entry 1   The Grand Magister has assigned me to lead the team on a new weapons project he has titled, the Planar Disruptor. I have seen the source material, and I would like to start by recording my skepticism into the log. The research here is largely incomplete and conjecture, and such a weapon could pose significant risk to our people and the entire Mortal Realm. Nevertheless I will begin work on a significantly reduced power prototype.     Entry 2   After the massive disruption to the flow of magic, the previous lead of the Planar disruptor has stepped down. I have been appointed by the Grand Magister to lead the project, although I am skeptical about the viability of the project given the current issue with magic. I worry as well about the Grand Magister’s ritual, but he seems insistent that he and his remaining apprentices will be able to make things work. But with the Planar Disruptor no longer having access to as much magic as we hoped, a situation that I fear will never be resolved, it may take years if not centuries to gain enough power to do so.     Entry 3   The Grand Magister has assigned me to lead the team on the Planar Disruptor. My predecessor clearly did not have the faith that I do in this project, and was reassigned to the front lines as a combat mage. I see the wisdom that the Grand Magister saw in his apprentices work, and although I cannot fully comprehend the magnificence of such a concept. My first order is to help transport the prototype device to the Underthrone where it will be safest under the watchful eye of our majestic Queen.

Torovian Prayer Book

This prayer book was recovered from the Temple of the Pantheon in Mosstown, New Torovia.     Celestine, lady of light, grant us your protection, for we are the faithful. Let us bask in your light and feel your love. When we do, we feel at peace.   Baelfury, King of beauty and strength, you are beloved by the faithful as well. We know the whims and wiles are not just chance, but under your balancing influence. You wield true power through sacrifice.   Ro, lady of death, we ride to war for your blessing. You keep us safe in your shadow, allowing us to toil in service of the world, to grow, civilize, and create art.   Sindar, the forest lord, master of the Cycle. You tame the wilds of nature, and sate the hunger of great beasts so that we may live in harmony. You keep the storms from our harbors and blights from our lands. We thank you for our freedom.   Arcanus, the wise one. Arcanus who gave us knowledge and the spark of ingenuity. Your blood is the very magic that flows through ourselves and the cosmos. You are the warden of time, and watch over us from birth ‘til death.

Torovian Priest's Notes

This scroll is all that remains of a set of notes from a Torovian priest, found in a temple in Mosstown, New Torovia.     I often wonder why the gods have forsaken us. Celestine was the most beloved of all the gods of the pantheon, and while her servants tell us about the treachery of Baelfury, I cannot help to notice that Celestine has never before been warlike. Her teachings have always been to show compassion, even in the face of pure malice, but perhaps the loss of a child is too much for even a god to bear. How could I, a simple mortal, even begin to understand that mind of a god. I am grateful that we have found peace, as temporary as it is, but I wonder why the others have not acted.     Arcanus has never been one to be proactive, but I would have thought Sindar and Ro to have taken issue here. The people say that Ro’s riders are no longer under her control, or that even she is dead, but this is foolish. If a god could be slain, it would have happened long ago. And Sindar? The wilds burn, and the elves with them, and he looks away. The good elves at the temple of their bat spirit were kind to us and helped ferry many of our people into the tunnels before they were sealed away. I hope that Sindar has at least sought to give them his protection and that we may all meet again when this nonsense has ended.     But more so, Baelfury’s actions confuse me the most. He has never been a creature of pride or greed, in fact our texts said that he cast those vices out of him when he created his Realm. While he is the god our people tend to like the least, he is the most proactive, but he does demand a price for what is given, yet it is always fair.

Grand Magister Kass' Journal

This appears to be the personal journal of Grand Magister Kass, recovered in the Kass Manor in Mosstown, New Torovia. The entries below are of significant relevance.   Entry 1   The months of travel between the Arcane Ward and Mosstown have become frustrating. Ever since Malkor betrayed my and murdered my apprentice Valys and absconded with her research I have been distraught. Our success on the Immortality device has stalled, but I have some new ideas. We always knew that the device would never be powerful enough to affect all Torovians, however once we dial in the specifications we should be able to translate it to a ritual using the notes Malkor left behind. It has been nearly a year since the last aasimar raid, and although we have not been able to penetrate any of their seals, I believe they will weaken in time. For now we rely on our scouts that know the secrets ways out as well as magic to communicate with the outside world. It seems that our arcane communication team now believes that the Gololthyr was able to resist a full invasion, and although the Varl have lost much of their territory, they have stymied the demon's advance, and likely eluded their extinction for the time being. We have heard little word from our allies in Gwintalatir since their demonic invasion, I hope communications are reestablished soon. Eredainwyn has been very helpful in his expertise in the creation of constructs. Although we do not have access to Aetherite like the saeli do, I think we may be able to use organic material in its stead.     Entry 2   I have been studying Valys’ remaining notes from her time in the Weaver’s Sanctum and although I once believed that it was mostly conjecture and logical leaps, the fact that Malkor absconded with the rest of them leads me to believe that there is something more to it. Moreso, it seems that our military strategies have not been paying off, so we may in fact need to seek alternate solutions to win this war. I have spoken to the queen about a potential project involving this research. Valys believed that the planes were all interconnected, and that they cannot simply be created at whim as our priests would tell us happened with Elysium and Hell. It seems that the conditions must be right, a time where the universe is out of balance and it enters a phase she called Orderings. During this time the universe attempts to correct that imbalance, and it becomes vulnerable to change. If what she theorizes is correct, we could extrapolate that to mean that massive changes could be made, planes of existence could be forged from an idea or emotion, gods could fall, new beings could rise to take their place. But in order to do this, we must force the world into utter chaos, or near pristine order, and the world is far too vast and varied a place for order. I believe we could construct a weapon, using Valys understanding of the cosmos, that would be capable of nearly destroying Elysium and Hell. This would force the universe into an Ordering, and Celestine and Baelfury would be too weak to seize enough power to maintain their planes, and thus their armies. We would be trading the devils we know, for ones we don’t but the alternative is facing annihilation.     Entry 3   Well it did not take long. Even though we have not seen much of the angelic hosts for some time, the demons have found their way into the secret ways and started to wreak havoc. The queen has ordered more of my mages to the front lines in order to defend what few tunnels we have access to. Unfortunately this means my research team is far fewer than I had hoped. I am ordering the team working on the planar disruptor to take it to the Underthrone to continue the work, while we make final preparations for the Immortality ritual. My remaining apprentices should be skilled enough to perform the complex ritual pieces Malkor left behind, although I worry about the cost. I fear that the risk we who do the ritual take is too high, and that we may expire as a result. I yearn to see my people free, however if our life is the cost, so be it. My heart mourns for young Parrin if it does come to pass. Never have I met such a kind, caring, and giving soul. I would have liked to see him take my place as Grand Magister one day. Young Master Moore is just the sort of person we need to rebuild Torovia.     Entry 4   I leave today, and I fear that I may not return. I worry about the safety of my wife, but the Duke has assured me that he will be gathering all people of importance in Mosstown and traveling to Darkstone City soon. I only hope his sloth does not get the better of him, he is truly a man of his vices. I received confirmation today that the prototype weapon has reached the Underthrone, and although it may take decades longer to get it in working order, no time is too long to wait for salvation. I still do not understand the recent restriction on magic we are able to access, but it is quite strange that it has happened to all of us. We will have to make due with less power. If this is the final entry in my journey on this mortal realm, know that I did what I do in the name of my country and its people.
