Krokodilian in Shattered Lands | World Anvil

Krokodilian

The mysterious and ancient kroks nearly vanished from the Archipelago and no one knows why. Hailing from the desert world of Brankshara (Br-ankh-shar-uh), the Krokodilians have adapted to living in some of the harshest and dry environments.   These reptilian humanoids value tradition, family, and legacy above all else which makes them quite rare to see outside of their home communities. Sometimes, however, for any number of reasons, a Krok will go looking for adventures both exciting and mundane apart from the dunes.   Just because they often stay within their communities does not mean they are less apt for magic. The Order of the Silver Scarab is an ancient society well known for its magical prowess and rumored to be the inventors of the school of Balance.

Saurian Intellect

The Krokodilian’s reptilian nature comes through not only in their appearance, but also in how they think and act. Kroks tend to fixate on things more easily than their humanoid counterparts and are more likely to structure their societies in ways that benefit their families and friends first before outsiders.   While this has lead to many great scholars and magicians of Krokodilian ancestry, it has also led to some of the most powerful empires built by outsiders for the sole comfort and ease of ancient kroks. That is not to say any Krok is ignorant of the emotions or wellbeing of others, but tradition and fixation on maintaining order can have a way of making one blind.

Ritualistic Predators

Many are intimidated when first encountering a Krokodilian, and rightfully so. Even without weapons or magic, a Krok is a weapon in and of itself. Legends tell of lush rivers where ancient Krok hunters would ambush their prey.   While many would find these primal predatory attributes as an indicator of a simplistic hunter-gatherer society, the truth is quite the opposite. The Krokodilians have a diverse set of distinct cultures and traditions, most notably around the fallen and the kroks' relationship in the predator-prey cycle.   These religious and ritualistic traditions go back centuries and are a rich and vibrant expression that is unique in all of the archipelago.

Krokodilian Names

Ancient Kroks took their names from a variation of Draconic, but over time have developed a language all their own. In their tongue, each name has a meaning and it is not unusual for a single krok to change names over time with greater and greater acomplishments. Linguistically, there is no distinction between male and female names, though often certain meanings are used more often for one over the other.   Akil / Akila (Wise Teacher), Aziz (one whose worth is within), Dankor (Humble), Hondo (Valiant Warrior), Irhtos (Myserious), Kepsek (tempest), Maibi (Serious / Grave demeanor), Meskahnat (Destined for Greatness), Mirik (Song), Ptolemy (Gazer of Stars), Teremun (loved by his father), Tur (King), Vyth (Royal One)
