Magic on Shardinia

Magic on Shardinia is described in two ways: Evidential Magic and Undisclosed Magic. Evidential Magic involves the use of Alanmantium. Alanmantium forms the core of the planet, gives it its gravity and magnetic fields, as well as imbuing the planet and its inhabitants with a magical force. Undisclosed Magic involves innate magical abilities, or magic gained through making a pact with an otherworldly patron.

Evidential Magic

The origins Evidential Magic are provable. Evidential Magic users use Alanmantium in one way or another to power their spells and abilities. As such, authorities on Shardinia see Evidential Magic as trustworthy, and its use is not regulated further than the laws of society.

Wizards

Schools of wizards have learned how to harness the power of Alanmantium in it's purest form, with crystals embedded into staffs and other spellcasting focuses. Alanmantium infused inks can also be used to create spell scrolls, and to inscribe spells into spellbooks for future use.

Druids/Rangers

The magical effects of Alanmantium spread faintly throughout the land and the plants and animals that inhabit Shardinia. Those of the Druidic tradition have learned to harness these traces of Alanmantine magic and bend it to their will. Those who walk the land - Rangers - have also learned to harness some of the natural magic that flows in Shardinia and its flora and fauna.

Artificers

Many tinkerers, inventors and craftspeople have discovered how to use Alanmantium crystals to power their inventions, giving magical effects to their contraptions, and even bringing them to life. Many artificers have also discovered the power of using Alanmantium to create arcane focuses, helping them to cast spells using its magic.

Clerics/Paladins

Some turn to religion to help them make sense of life and their place in the world. The many orders and religions of Shardinia have also discovered the magic of Alanmantium, using it to create holy symbols through which they can commune with their deities, and some even are able to cast spells using the power of Alanmantium and their faith.

Undisclosed Magic

The origins of Undisclosed Magic are not provable. As such, authorities on Shardinia see Undisclosed Magic as untrustworthy, and Undisclosed Magic users live in persecution. In many places the use of undisclosed magic is outlawed, and the public perception of Undisclosed Magic Users tends towards the negative. There are people who see users as misunderstood and would happily see them exonerated and the restrictions lifted, but there are also those who see them as evil devil worshippers, and would just as happily have them all incarcerated. To move freely in society, users of Undisclosed Magic must be careful. Some choose to never show their powers in public spaces, and live as non-magic users for all intents and purposes, while others have honed the techniques to disguise their spellcasting, using a fake arcane focus to pose as Evidential Magic casters.

Warlocks

Warlocks have gained magical abilities by making a pact with an otherworldly patron. This otherworldly origin of their magic is the root cause of concern around Undisclosed Magic on Shardinia. This concern is especially prevalent in religious circles, many of whom see Warlocks as devil worshippers - who will act as conduits for devils and demons to make their way to Shardinia and bring about an apocalypse.

Sorcerers

Sorcerers are innately imbued with the power of Alanmantium from birth. There is no agreed upon explanation for how Sorcerers came into being, but there are several leading theories:
  • Some believe that Sorcerers are descended from ancient celestial beings that walked the Shard many thousands of years ago
  • Some believe that Sorcerers were created by experiments that were at best wild, at worst diabolical, into physically imbuing beings with Alanmantium
  • Some believe that Sorcerers are merely drug takers, who create various Alanmantium concoctions, and ingest them in some way in order to gain powers from the Alanmantium
  • Some, potentially those of a more extreme religious persuasion, believe that Sorcerers are actually Warlocks who lie about the source of their powers to hide their heretical ways
