Elemental Nature

When a living thing is conceived, its personality, demeanor, outlook, or nature is highly dependent on the Natural Planes that the Pneuma has passed through, and the intensity of the Pneuma. Philosophers at The College of Altruis have managed to create a chart to predict this flow, and have also identified the traits that each Plane imparts. One's Pneuma doesn't not definitively define one's personality, upbringing and environment is equally as important, but it does retain a strong influence.   There are four 'Pure' elemental planes that can either have an effect on their own, or when mixed with the others, and there is a Null place, which imparts no effect of its own, but diminishes the effect that the other planes have, or blocks it entirely if on its own. By far the most common occurrance is for there to be no influence from a Natural Plane at all.

As well as these Elemental combinations, the ebb and flow of Pneuma determines the strength of a person's affliation to their elemental influence. When the flow is strong, then a person is said to be 'Bright' in their influence, and when the flow is weak, then a person is said to be 'Dark'. The greatest magic users have been those with Bright influences, and those who are Dark tend to be resistant to magic.   It was realised not long after the discovery of the patterns that the flow of Pneuma follows, that if this information was widely known, then birthrates would be affected, with parents wishing for their children to be born under beneficial influences, and avoiding Dark years.
