Session XII
General Summary
Arriving at Black Rock Castle to report to Lady Nacht, the party finds themselves sitting in the waiting room and... waiting for well over twelve hours, only meeting with the woman in the early afternoon. There, they report on their findings and the discovery of a cult among the local Reiklander State Army detachment's ranks - she is much concerned, and promises to see to dealing with that particular problem, while ordering them to proceed with their investigations, otherwise.
The group returns to Magnus' tower to investigate corporal Vielfrass' quarters and supposed murder site again, this time seeing if the hole in the window aligns with anything in particular - at which point they notice what seems to be a tower far in the distant Grey Mountains.
As rumours surface of watchmen going missing and a body of one washing up on the Teufel river banks, the party heads for the market where they speak with Heske Glazer, a glass maker, and despite an awkward conversation involving Morathric's desire to recreate glass parts of Vielfrass' physique that sees him unable to ever converse with the woman again, they learn that she's been making giant lenses for a mage over at the Tower of Vane in the Grey Mountains, suspecting the giant lenses might be related to the giant, burning hole that was left in the late cultist corporal's chest.
Thus, they set out to travel the next day, headed for the Grey Mountains and the Tower of Vane. Taking the Emperor's roads from the southern gate, they pass through the crossroads market town of Messingen, quieter than usual thanks to Greenskin raids, and the farming town of Grausee, staying for the night at the farming hamlet of Traisburg in the one tavern. The town is oddly tense and there is little food - an Altdorfer army is camped on one side of the town, a Jungfreud army on the other side, and the armies' officers are both using the tavern-sans-inn for private rooms, the bar room neatly divided between allegiances and the hapless townfolk once again stuck in the middle of things.
The next day, they venture onward and into the mountains, where they were shared some lunch from townsfolk at the tiny hamlet of Bamenz, built on top of a bluff in the Grey Mountains accessed only through dangling ropes. After enjoying the view, the group passed through the mining town of Grunwächt, a severely depleted community following Greenskin raids, occupied almost solely by those working directly in the town's mining industry, where the "green gold" electrum is mined.
As they traveled further into the mountains, the hamlet of Elssen came into distant view, the last settlement before they'd reach the Tower of Vane, which looms overhead in the mountains, there - but before they could get there, the familiar figure of Sergeant Orban Geldrecht and some Altdorfer compatriots stepped into view, furious at the group's betrayal of their fighting club..
