Mr. Breaker

Mr. Roger Montgomery Breaker

Written by: Tahoma

It's always been said that success isn't about what you know, but who you know, and the shadows are no exception to this. Whatever trade you're getting into - drugs, arms, laundering, or good old-fashioned organised violence, you're eventually gonna need connections to make any kind of profit from it. Enter the fixer, the quintessential guy who knows a guy, your alternative to trying to make friends with people who generally don't care for your existence. For the right price, a fixer will be the middle-man in any exchange of ilicit goods or services, and make sure the people you trade with are the kind who hold up their end of the deal and don't just steal your organs on the meet-up.   Roger Breaker, the owner and namesake of Mr. Breaker's Bunker, is a fixer's fixer: He's made it his business to shake hands with every shot-caller in Raleigh, along with anyone who knows anyone, all from the comfort of his boxing-hall and gym. Mr. Breaker prides himself on being a consumate professional, guaranteeing the quality of his services as an illicit middle-man and promising none of the fights he takes bets on at his domain are rigged in any way, but don't let that make you think he's in any way a pushover: Once you look past the hospitality and funny cockney slang, you'll know that Mr. Breaker is at the end of the day a hardened criminal, and any disrespect towards him or his establishment will see you thrown into one of his bloodsports. Don't forget to tip, chummer.
Here's a little advice from someone who works a lot with Mr Breaker: The guy's old-school, and I mean real old-school. He makes a big deal over following the aesthetic of gangers from the previous century, all sharp suits and professional businesses, and most importantly, respect. If you want to get into his good books, just remember to show recognition of his authority and behave yourself in his establishments, and avoid anything that might give such places ill-repute, and he'll repay the courtesy.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Thanks to some expert 'pursuasion' of one of the local street-docs, I was able to get a sneak-peak at the man behind the muscle. His physique's pretty unspectacular, save for a few scares, but it turns out that Mr. Breaker's got some pretty high-end cyberware under his suit, including a ceramic skeletal-reinforcement, Biomonitor, vat-job muscles and a pair of police-grade cybereyes, all alpha-grade.
To clarify, it's high-end for hardware that appears to be made ten years ago. Not that it makes his right hook any less dangerous, mind you.

Personal history

Unsurprisingly, much of Roger Breaker's actual past is a mystery, and the few long-term associates he has are reluctant to share anything about the guy. What we know for sure is that Mr. Breaker wasn't always Mr. Breaker: He used to be a man called Julian Foster, and was a member of the Brixton Yardies, a Jamaican gang in upper London. That particular group were never power-player themselves but tended to work on behalf of the actual shot-callers in the city's underworld, and made a name for themselves as enforcers and hitmen, committing acts of directed violence with all the subtlety of a shark with a submachinegun. That particular gang however, was scattered in 2060 when local law-enforcement raided their home-block on a tip of a former associate of the gang.   Exactly how Julian escaped the police-raid is still a subject of conjecture, but however he did it, he managed to stay off the grid completely for a couple of years. it wasn't until 2062 when a local gym owner by the name of Jared Burke passed away from a stroke, and shocked his friends and family when his will decreed that his gym and business would be inherited by an 'old friend' called Roger Breaker, who was in actuality the new identity of Julian Foster. As you'd expect, there was a brief legal shitstorm over this complete stranger being the prime beneficiary of a dying man's last will and testament, but after some intense negotiations the outcry quietly stopped shortly afterwards.
See, I can shine a light on this one: Jared never actually knew Roger/Julian, let-alone considered him an 'old friend'. The will was doctored, and several personal conversations between him and Roger were fabricated to make it look legitimate. Big surprise, huh?

From there, Mr. Breaker began building up his own illegitimate enterprises in the back-rooms, taking illegal bets for boxing-matches and brokering goods procured through petty crime. Once he started to expand downwards after acquiring the remains of an old bunker built under the gym a few years back, he felt confident enough to broaden his visions and started going after bigger things, using unmarked rooms to host bloodsports and shaking hands with some real shot-callers in Raleigh's underground, promising them a level of discretion and impartiality you couldn't usually get in other neutral territories.

Personality Characteristics

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Mr. Breaker's success all hinges on his way of getting along with people. No pheremones, no adept shenanigans, just a guy with a smooth voice who can think on the fly and figure out your personality before you've even finished your first drink, and when things don't go his way, he always seems to know the best way to intimidate you into giving him what he wants.
That last part doesn't sound impressive. I mean, are there really that many people who can't be intimidated by a couple of boxers threatening to shatter their kneecaps?
— Cr4nk
Sure, that'll work like a charm if you're an unimposing salaryman, but a lot of the people Mr. Breaker talks to either have guys of their own who can do the same, if not worse, or they think they're tough enough to handle it themselves. Either way, a little finesse is needed.

Now Mr. Breaker does have a weakness, and that's his limited ability to think outside the box: If he can't get what he wants through negotiation, bribery or a couple of legbreakers kicking you down the same flight of stairs for thirty minutes, he's far less capable at thinking up alternatives and seeing them through, and tends to outsource those things to others, usually shadowrunners.
