Double Exposure Part 1: Hope

General Summary

For almost a year, the Universal Brotherhood’s Project Hope has been transforming the Barrens, giving Seattle's down-and-outers a bed, a roof, clean clothes and three squares a day in return for helping to revitalize the megaplex's worst slums. The UCAS FBI takes notice that, among the many charitable donations, Renraku has been pouring enough nuyen in to buy a small country. Why the most notoriously racist megacorp would be helping a program that predominantly helps metahumans is a matter of concern to the UCAS government.

Special Agent Simon Juarez blackmails the runners with footage he collected of some of their recent shadowruns that cost a lot of nuyen for the Yakuza and Aztechnology. Juarez wants the runners to infiltrate Project Hope and find hard evidence that Renraku’s ties to the Brotherhood are anything but charitable. While he does offer a paltry payment of 3,000¥, the blackmail footage ensures that the runners will keep quiet about anything they find. However, Juarez is placed in a stasis spell by Magwyn who offers her services as their new fixer to fill in for Yantho. She claims she pushed Juarez in their direction. Renraku backed out of a deal with her and now she wants leverage over them. Whatever dirt the runners dig up, she wants to see it first. In return, she casts another spell on Juarez to offer 10 times the payment, totaling 30,000¥ each.

The runners went through a Project Hope enrollment center downtown, posing as homeless people and get admitted into the Project Hope work camp in Glow City. The camp is a lush garden in the middle of the waste, protected by high walls and guarded by contracted Knight Errant Peace Officers. They meet the project’s director Jonathon Tung working amongst the others, who offers them the cleanest water they ever tasted. In their time undercover, they learn that Renraku is pulling out of whatever deal they have with the Brotherhood, giving them 2 weeks to complete their mission.

When Camp Hope was attacked by the combined efforts of the mutant gangers of the Rusted Stilettos and the mutant cultists Radiant Coil. The runners used this distraction to get inside the security building and dig up what info they could. They find very little, but they are noticed by Ted Walden, who had been working as an undercover agent for weeks. He determined that if there are any answers, it’s going to be with the company that ships the clear water and soil to Project Hope: New Day Environics. Walden offers 10,000¥ to infiltrate their purification facility in Tacoma.

Unearthed Secrets

  • The camp was practically crawling with spies of various parties that took an interest in Project Hope. One of them was Aztechnology.
  • The mutant cult that attacked demanded the "return of the vagrants to the engine." At the time, the runners assumed these ramblinss reffered to the homeless. Later, during the Knight Raid mission, the runners would learn that the "vagrants" were stolen parts to build a nuclear reactor.
