Knight Raid

General Summary

The FBI investigated Camp Faith and found the insect spirit hive beneath. They were pushed back by the swarm and by the time military reinforcements arrived, the Hive had packed up and moved deeper into the underground tunnels. The FBI had contracted Knight Errant to scour the Ork Underground for location of the insect spirit hive. As the foremost "experts" on the Insect Spirit threat, Special Agent Simon Juarez hired the runners to join the Knight Errant eradication task force to destroy the hive once and for all.

Knight Errant had set up a blockade in Hammer's Cross, and old manufacturing neighborhood of the Ork Underground that was vital in its construction. The hive was believed to be cornered underneath an abandoned dwarven smelting forge. O'dundin intervened with a Knight that had gotten rough with a Sikh dwarf at the blockade. The dwarf, Mr. Long invited them back to his alchemical tea shop. He requested that while they were in the forge, they find his son who had been exploring inside when the blockade went up.

Commander Malachai led the runners and three fire teams into the plant to reach the hive. They were quickly beset upon by insect spirits who tore apart the floors in order to separate them. The insects activated the forge's toxin filtration system, which had the effect of filtering out the insecticide weapons that had worked so well before while the old system belched out toxic gases that obscured the runner's vision. The runners managed to turn off the ventilation to buy them some advantage.

As the skirmish intensified, the shadowrunner mage, Dex, made psychic contact with the hive mind and spoke directly to the Queen. He asked to know what it is they want in the hopes of coming to a peaceful compromise. But the hive only wants flesh. They wish to escape their home metaplane, and they need sapient vessels to inhabit and anchor themselves to the material plane where they can gorge themselves on our planet's biomatter. Dex request for audience intrigued the Hive Queen, who commander her children to stand down and instead escort them. The other runners reluctantly went along. Commander Malachai gave them 30 minutes to enact whatever insane plan they had, fortifying their position in the meantime.

As they were guided by the Queen's astral tether to her location, they found there were hundreds, perhaps thousands of flesh form insect spirits throughout the tunnels. The formidable armored warriors they passed made it clear that the insects they struggled with in the factory were only workers, meant as fodder to test their capabilities. The Queen had wanted to draw them in to the very place they had now willingly come.

The Queen, a bloated monstrosity of armored chitin and human flesh sat upon her ovithorax like a throne, the walls around her writhing with the forms of her children. Dex proposed that metahuman and insect could co-exist, perhaps sacrificing some cities to leave the whole. The Queen in turn offered to make Dex her new ambassador, since Tung's matter was re-absorbed after he had exhausted his usefulness. The Queen's astral form manifested beneath her, the same woman in the sun dress with matted greasy hair, her bare feet leaving a trail of slime with each step. Dex entered her embrace, and she kissed him passionate as the queen's arms raised him up and cocooned him. The woman smiled and offered the runners the gift of their lives, unless they also wanted to join the Harmony. They respectfully declined.

Commander Malachi was not entirely convinced of the cover story the runners concocted, nearly firing upon them. He revealed that Knight Errant had tracked the Hive by the radiation let off by a nuclear generator that the Hive had built by unknown means and for unknown reasons. He and the other Knights were about to escort a drone that could trigger a remote meltdown, but the runners (mostly Squid) managed to convince him that setting off a nuclear detonation in a populated area might have unforeseen consequences on the Ares shareholders' bottom line.

On their way out, they found Mr. Long's son hiding in a vent within the factory and returned him home. Juarez was not pleased with the runners's results, but conceded that they had technically fulfilled their contractual obligations. Knight Errant's reinforcements arrived, to find the tunnels had been emptied, the Hive having moved deeper within. But the people of Hammer's Cross were grateful that their home did not go up in a mushroom cloud. Dex's fate remains unknown.
