Over The Moon

While chilling at Riverplex, enjoying the sight of yet another soccer derby turned riot, the runners are secretly passed a burner commlink by a streetrat. There is only one number in the logbook, and it calls soon after. If they answer the comm, they are faced with a woman wearing a lab coat and a huge grin. Her hair and face look as if she was recently blown up. She introduced herself with a German accent as Doctor Frankenstein, a special effects expert for trid shows.   Doctor Frankenstein has found the perfect subject to act as monster, a white Fenrir Wolf. The problem is the wolf is currently in captivity, held by the Zwolse Lifestock Institute for experiments alongside a dozen of its kind. Doctor Frankenstein needs the specific one, by the codename Moon Moon, though she does want the runners not to harm the others, as to not emotionally harm Moon Moon. Killing security is off-limits too.

Dr. Franciene Stein is indeed a special effects creator with a lengthy career. Moon Moon would indeed be a good model for her. However, she didn't just randomly discover him. A college friend actively asked her to extract Moon Moon.   See, the ZLI is researching ways to make Fenrir wolves more manageable. Their hyper-aggression and tendency to kill off weaker pups combine poorly with their territoriality. To make proper guard dogs out of them, the ZLI is trying to selectively breed out the aggression. Which resulted in failure Moon Moon, without a single hostile bone in its body. As a result, the wolf is about to be culled. The scientists want to save him without endangering their project, so they contacted Dr. Franciene Stein.

The Run

The ZLI has several research sites in the north. The Fenrir Wolves are kept at the Veluwe, their original habitat, but in a controlled part of it that serves as their cage. Spirit and drone patrols complement physical security, meant to keep hostile wildlife out and the specimen in. It is this large site that the runners need to carefully infiltrate.   Fortunately they can get some information from the neighbours. The Veluwe is home to various people, most of which rather dislike a Megacorp doing business near them. The local preppers and doomsayers are easy to turn on the ZLI, if properly bribed or perhaps threatened. The carrot does come with less risk of betrayal than the stick. Literal carrots work, as does other food, supplies, seeds, and more.

Word on the street

"His colour is wrong and he won't even attack his food! Plus he's more dimwitted than a broken lightbulb. Frankly, his very existence is a threat to our entire project. Cull him, that's an order."

"It's such a beauty! Oh, the wonders I could do with that wolf as my main actor... I must have it!"

"Y'all want intel on the ZLI? Well, I'll be happy to provide y'all. Security, patrols, the gaps in their chainlink fences... Over a stiff drink, that is."

"He's a failure of a specimen, and you want to steal him back? We'll be a laughing stock. Sweep it under the rug, that's an order."

The Complications

The anti-aggression breeding project is making progress, which is part of why Moon Moon is still alive. The pack is more a pack and less aggressive leadership, and they take care of their own. When the runners try to get Moon Moon, they quickly find out the pack likes the wolf even more than the scientists do. Prioritising escape through their Fear ability, the wolves will make it hard for the runners to catch them.   The amount of fuss will also alert security, so a lengthy chase can result in being pincered by pack and security. And even once they get Moon Moon, the runners still have to escape. This may require them to first flee onto the Veluwe and face hostile wildlife.

The Aftermath

Moon Moon proves a hit, its white fur allowing for easy tweaking and its friendly nature making it easy to direct it. The ZLI considers pressing charges, but that'd require exposing their pet project to the competition. In the end, they settle for some petty sabotage, which doesn't really go anywhere.   As for the runners, if they didn't excessively harm any of the other Fenrir wolves or security, the ZLI scientists will remember them and occasionally throw them a bone in the form of data theft and extraction of competing projects. As well as the rare request to once more 'extract' a specimen about to be culled by order of the higher-ups.
