Ivory Tower

Jackdaw was staring towards infinity, her eyes not focused at all on the landscape outside. Her show had long since ended, and her wagon had emptied several stations ago, with just a handful people remaining throughout the entire train. Her trance was interrupted as the speakers sounded out the conductor's broadcast. "Gentlebeings, we are now approaching our final stop. Please exit with your belongings, and may we see each other again in good health, if life be so kind. I wish you a good day."   With that solemn message, the system shut off again and the train started slowing down. With a sign, Jackdaw gathered her possessions and threw her garbage in the can. Then, she grabbed her backpack and took out an armoured jacket and some heavy gauntlets. Lastly, her ballistic mask. She tapped a few buttons to switch its display from a joyful smile to an angry snarl. If anyone was thinking of harassing her, she was here to show them that was a thought they needed to reconsider.   As she got out of the train, she noticed the conductor looking her way. He sent her a nod, a gesture she returned in kind. Then she moved to exit the station, using her burner comm to go through its gates. The remainder of her security deposit was deposited back into the connected account, a paltry sum she could maybe use for random bribes before trashing the comm.   Outside the station, she looked north. There it was, the abomination that was visible throughout half the country. Rising well over a kilometer above the North Sea, built upon the grave of Groningen, pretending to have the right to hold the same name. The Arkoblocks were a show of ingenuity, a massively underhabited wonder of technology. And above all, a display of power and arrogance. She knew she should admire it. She loathed its very existence.   She turned away from the sight, petty enough to order her image link to block it with a popup of information, so that she did not have to see it from the corner of her eyes. With her backpack on her back and her hands ready to go for her weapons, she made her way to the taxi stand, where her ride was already waiting. Ignoring the local gangers sizing her up, she walked up to the car and opened the passenger door with the access code she had been provided. The driver nodded at her and began driving away even before she could get her seatbelt on.
