Green Torment Plot in Shadowland | World Anvil

Green Torment

While enjoying a drink at a bar, the runners are approached by the bartender who slides them a business card for a London bar named the Peppermint Twist, with a second commcode scrawled down on it. There is a note saying to call if they want to take on a B&E job in Europort.   If the team calls the second number, they are answered by a Matrix Persona that is shaped as a bartender in a classic uniform, with the face blurred out. With a mechanically disguised voice, they introduce themself as their Johnson, the Green Torment. The assignment is to steal back a bunch of bottles of Absinthe from a Regulus JI manager. Said manager has stolen the bottles in the past, and now Green Torment wants them all back, as soon as possible.

'Absinthe' is the managing bartender of the Peppermint Twist. She is also known as the Green Torment, because the cocktails she helps make are a great kick in the teeth during the hangover the next day. The quality of the liquor is definitely worth it, though. Needless to say, her liquor of choice is absinthe.   Back in the early 2070s, Regulus moved its headquarters from London to Europort. One of the Peppermint Twist's regulars was a lowranking manager and covertly robbed all bottles of an extinct brand of absinthe, with a bottling year of 2011, the last batch made before magic returned to the world.   Recently, some pictures surfaced of the manager's office, with the bottles visible. Once Absinthe found out who was responsible for the theft, she started planning a counter-heist.

The Run
The runners need to identify their target based on the picture, then figure out exactly where he works. Once they know that, they can start planning the heist. Fortunately for them, due to recent tensions most security focuses on the floors of the highest ranks, so the middle-rank offices are easier to break into.   There still is a decent bit of security, but also plenty of folks of all kinds working during the night, so the runners could easily infiltrate as either cleaning crew or some form of manager being accompanied by a group of bodyguards. That said, they had better dress the part that they're going to play, or else they have to avoid all the Queen's men.

Word on the street
"Those bottles are to kill for. Untained by magic, some say. I don't, but that brand was amazing."

"We'd been trying to find whoever it was, but turns out we were looking in the wrong city."

"Oh yeah, that liquor of his is real nice. Though honestly it kinda feels... Not worth the hype, I guess?"

"Man that guy is a jerk, his hell hounds keep making noise. Fortunately a neighbour kid found the right angle to toss them jerky. He's actually training them to behave that way."

The Complications
When the runners reach the office, they're in for a surprise. The bottles are forgeries, with the labels coming off easily. Turns out their target only pretended to use the real stuff to cozy up to his higher-ups. Searching his desk will reveal a picture showing his private collection at home, which has certain easily-recognizable bottles on it.   As for the house, its yard is walled in and has a small herd of hell hounds treating it as home. Supposedly guard dogs, in truth horribly untrained. If the runners bribe them, they'll be fine. If not, they may be on the wrong end of a nice barbeque. Once inside, they can easily find the collection, taking the bottles back, and maybe a few others for themselves.
The Aftermath
When the bottles are returned, Absinthe gleefully sacrifices one by sending it to Regulus higher management. When they taste the real thing, they catch onto how they were played by their subordinate. Soon a special classified project is set up, located on an oil platform in the North Sea, and guess who gets to supervise it?   Meanwhile, the Peppermint Twist holds a special night where one of the bottles is opened and people get to gamble to win the right for a shot. The rest of the collection returns to the wall, this time behind security glass and with some proper offline alarms connected. No thief will get their hands on the bottles this time.

Do you use Nuyen as a default currency instead of the various monies described in the "place" books?

Yeah, since people know it as their default and some folks are normally in countries where they just use nuyen. Since the Euro is 1:1 with nuyen anyway, it doesn't matter much.

Hm but now I want to replace all the nuyen symbols with euro symbols. You did this to me. XD So many runs I'll have to edit.
