Fighting The Law

The taxi driver talked to Jackdaw about random subjects, non-controversial ones that served as the perfect filler. She could tell he was just going through the motions, a gesture she responded to politely with idle chit-chat from her side. He sent a few curious glances at his display, a subtle way of checking the security cams observing her. It seemed he did see something he was interested in, but he managed to restrain himself.   She took her own time observing the vehicle, looking for the hidden compartments and whatnot. It was a decent car, disguised as a mediocre one. Gunports even for the passengers, gassing controls to take out an unruly guest, automatic weapons ready to fire at any attackers. Within these wilder areas, it was a smart move to have some proper selfdefense at hand.   After about fifteen minutes, they came upon a police checkpoint, a car standing by next to a mobile barricade. The taxi driver stopped and nodded at the officer approaching them, broadcasting all his identification information. Jackdaw followed, broadcasting her fake SIN and licenses. The officer, who she recognised instantly, looked her over to see what she might be hiding. It seemed he liked what he saw, as he suppressed a sadistical smirk.   Just as he was about to start speaking, Jackdaw sighed and spoke to the driver herself. "He's about to order us out of the car. Please unlock my door, I'll go talk with him." The officer frowned as he gestured to roll the window down. His frown deepened when Jackdaw's door unlocked and she slowly got out, ignoring his hand reaching for his holster. "Alright, Hubert, let's get this over with, shall we?"   He glared at her. "Do I know you? Doesn't matter, I didn't give you permission to get out of the car. I'm going to need you to put your hands on the car and stay where you are. I'll run you and see what you're really up to." He sent a quick glare at the driver, who she could see barely managed to not roll his own eyes in response. "If either of you make any sudden moves, I'm gunning you down, you hear?"   She barked out a laugh. "Of course you will. That's how you make a living, no, Hubert? Scamming random visitors that you feel nobody will miss, beating up locals when you can get away with it, stealing all they have. You never changed." Her tone changed from amused to steel, causing him to take a step back. "No, but I'm not playing your game today. You are a bully and I don't feel like dealing with you. So either you leave us alone, or I'll give you the fight you deserve."   Officer Hubert now had his hand on his gun, his fingers inching towards the grip and trigger. His glare and frown had joined into a murderous look, not even a sadistical one, as he actually felt fear. She quite enjoyed that. "Sounds like you want to become some paperwork and a body in the morgue, lady. I suggest you mind your tone. Bad idea to think you can take on the police."   "I'm not taking on the police. See, nobody cares about you. They know you're corrupt trash. And you never have your bodycam or transmission on. So, last chance. Back off. Or die surprised."   A moment of silence. The beginning of a draw. She was on him faster, her augmented draw far quicker than his careless undrugged attempt. She didn't even waste a bullet, her Praetorian's underbarrel bayonet cutting through his throat. As he fell to the floor, she pulled out a cleansing grenade and closed her eyes as it exploded all over the place. Before the driver had even managed to recover, she already had gotten back in the car and nodded at him. In silence, he drove off, leaving the crime scene in their mirrors.
