A long way home

"Howdy chummer, what can I get you today? Your usual bread, or perhaps some cakes? They came out particularly well today!" The market seller sounded a bit softer than normal, his voice a bit gruffy. He must have drunk too much last night, a bit too much partying after the local soccer club won for once.   Jackdaw grinned as she responded, while random shopping market shouts surrounded them. "What, like the way you make them particularly well every week? Nah, I'll take half a dozen brown bread rolls. I'm actually leaving town for a while, and I need them for the ride."   "Your loss! I'm telling you, they're my best ever! You're really missing out!" With a playful grin, the guy offered her his commlink. She tapped her credstick against it, authorising the payment, before taking her bag and waving him goodbye. It was fitting that this stall was her last stop before leaving, as some good warm bread had been her first stop when she first came to Riverplex years ago.   As she slowly walked between the stalls, occasionally stealing a glance at some of the no-doubt stolen or knock-off wares, Jackdaw enjoyed the sound and smells. With the amount of time she had spent here, the place almost felt like home to her. Almost. But there was something missing, a nagging feeling that sometimes would twang her heartstrings.   After leaving the market behind, she walked towards the station. Just past it, she could see the high rise towers, where the rich lived and spent their days looking down on the old city center, both literally and figuratively. For some in her profession, being able to retire there was their goal. She herself leaned more towards the Neo-A contempt of those folks. But right now, she cared more about the station.   Only keeping half an eye on the cops as she quickly crossed the road before a bus came rushing by, Jackdaw wondered whether the watertap would be reliable today. She decided not to chance it, not with the train ride ahead of her. When she reached the entrance gate, she took out a burner comm, scanning the device to validate her ticket. One of the local guards took a quick look at the comm then at her, most likely having a theory on her profession but not being paid enough to care.   All these motions, she was so used to. The gestures, the glances, the smells, the sounds. Normally they were just a familiar feel. Today, it somehow broke her heart instead. She missed home, the real one. So now, it was time to visit. The train was there, so she got in. Time to go.

Congratulations on completing the first chapter of "The longest journey" (again). As promised, here is a little memento to remember your travels - I hope to see you in chapter 2!

Sit down, my friend, and let me tell you of Aran'sha . A world where the sands shift and the stars sing, where the wind carries secrets and the twin moons keep silent vigil over it all.

Unfortunately, there was a slight mixup with the article link for chapter 2. Here is the correct link for Chapter 2. Hope to see you there!
